Default Predator vs. Prey

As it was getting dark last night I happened to see the amusing scene shown in the picture below. A red-tailed hawk had landed on my roof and he and a squirrel were having a stare down contest. This lasted about ten minutes until the hawk flew away. I was sure the squirrel was going to be the hawk's dinner, but not this night.

I love birds of prey.

I was walking to lunch one day when I was startled by a loud rustling off to my right. I looked over to see a hawk taking flight with a freshly killed pigeon not 10 feet from me. I actually got a bunch of feathers on me from the cloud of them he shook loose. . . I never heard him until the hit.

There are a few owls who live in the woods behind my place. It's amazing when one of them suddenly comes out of the brush and flies past. The rodent population doesn't stand a chance.

I go running at night with Moxie, and I've seen a white owl from time to time. I never hear him flying, just see him. They're huge.

In Montana, and probably other parts, you can't leave small dogs out during the day. Larger hawks can and do scoop them up and take them away.

That's a cool photo! Too bad the squirrel got away.
I watched a hawk chasing a robin through the trees in our yard the other evening. The robin narrowly escaped by diving into some thick evergreen trees.

Birds of prey are very cool.

We have some type of hawk that hangs around where I work which is in a more or less suburban area. He hangs around on the overhead electrical wires just watching and waiting.
