Default Can Tire Pressure Monitoring System be disabled?

and how? Can it be done through a program like LS1 edit? On the DIC, it says i need to service it. I'd rather just do away wtih it, b/c i have no real care or need for it. Has anyone done this before or can anyone tell me if its possible without throwing the ECM off for something else?

I understand that it can be disabled. The Z06 does not have the system active, but I believe that sensors can be added and the system then enabled. The dealer can do it, but I don't know about LS1 edit.

I have the same problem. I'm tired of the messages in the DIC and would also like to disable it.

Thanks guys. What is this GM Tech Tool II? Is it similar to LS1 Edit or some of the other prograrms out there? These tire pressure monitoring systems in these cars are worthless/faulty...they tell me i need air in a tire that has the right amount.

Yep, but it only works with a 2001 or later BCM.

The OP (with his 1998) is out of luck.

Obviously. But i want to disable the system, b/c i think its way too sensative and just a nusciance. I'll have to do some digging around to see whats out there that can take this pain away.

HI there,
The operational tolerance is +- 2 psi.
So, as a libility, service centers who disable the system can be held accountable for vehicle crashes that are as a result of low tire pressures.
Thats the biggest reason why I will INSTALL, but not disable.

I think this tire monitoring system is of little use. I have never had the need to know if I need 2 or 3 pounds of air in my tires. In all my driving years a quick visual can detect if you are low in air. Even how the car rides will tell you a tire is low. The system in the corvette is faulty and a constant pain for those of use who dont have a z06 vette. If it were so valuable, why wouldnt a z06 have the system installed. Of all cars, the ultra fast zo6 would probably have the worst crash assuming it would be going the fastest. It is a horrible device that just causes problems and expense. I too would pay extra NOT to have it. I would be willing to sign a paper stating that all parties are NOT liable if I would incure a accident. just my two cents. edram454.

I think the reason its on non Z06 vetts is because of the standard run flats that are installed. Its very hard to visually inspect a GY run flat and tell its low on pressure. Thus GM had to provide a way to notify the driver if a tire was low. Since the Z06 did not come with run flats it was not needed/required since the driver would be able to see or tell after they started driving.

Personally the TPMS works very well on mine and I use it to check the pressure at least once a week. Tires and gas(now) are way to expensive to be getting uneven wear or poor gas mileage due to tire pressures.

I can understand that having the DIC screaming at you about tire pressures would be very annoying as the wifes van had TPMS issues. Good thing the it was still under warranty they had to call the company that manufactures it for Chrylster to get it fixed.

I'm glad I have it working.
It only comes on when under 25psi.
It's saved me twice

I agree with Shan, I use my TPS system on both my corvettes. For the C4, had to replace two sensors. My 02 is now 5 years old and soon the batteries will go and I'll have to replace the sensors. I put nitrogen in my C4 tires from a dealer - refill for life of the tire at no charge. My spare lost 5 psi in one year. The other 4 have not lost any since I put nitrogen in them. If they do lose pressure, I can top off with air (which is about 80% nitrogen) until I get to the dealer. Have not added to my run flats yet. According to the service manager, Corvettes are the most frequent users of the nitrogen system.

Uncle Sam is going to see to it that everyone pays for it as tire pressure monitoring systems are coming as a standard feature on every car in the not to distance future.

Even run-flats can have dramatic failures if they are actually run flat at speed for long periods of time. Since the average driver can't tell the difference between a flat tire thumping and their stereo thumping, the low pressure warning is a great idea. And run flat don't thump or bump when flat, the tire pressure system was mandated for all run flat applications.

I'll keep my working and have them fixed if they stop working.
