Default Wisconsin gas station owner told to raise prices

This is odd...
Go ahead. Just try to give a little something back to your community...

Gas station owner told to raise prices

MERRILL, Wis. - A service station that offered discounted gas to senior citizens and people supporting youth sports has been ordered by the state to raise its prices.

Center City BP owner Raj Bhandari has been offering senior citizens a 2 cent per gallon price break and discount cards that let sports boosters pay 3 cents less per gallon.

But the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says those deals violate Wisconsin's Unfair Sales Act, which requires stations to sell gas for about 9.2 percent more than the wholesale price.

Geez you'd think there would be a work-around, like refunds or rebates. Boo hiss.

Minnesota has similar laws. The Sam's Club near us has been fined several times for selling gas too cheap.

I think the intent of the law was to watch out for the small independent station owner. It was to keep the big guys from coming in and running the little guys out of business by undercutting prices. Most of the little guys are gone anyway, so it didn't seem to help much.

....which I have NO ISSUE with at all. Mom and Pop businesses are the backbone of this country. But this guy is trying to give something back to his community by supporting kids and senior citizens... he's not trying to corner the market.

Hopefully he'll find a way around it.

He should find a way to give away a few free gallons. I wonder if the law only applies to selling gas?
