There are lapses..... but it never leaves.
It still rushes back like the never ending flood of an unstoppable tide.
I was alone in the darkness. The wind through the pines made a high pitched howling sound like a runaway train heading for a cave-in at the local mine.
I lifted my collar as if doing so might keep out the cold.
As the beacon silently swept across the desolate airfield, my thoughts wandered back to home…so far away….

DOZENS OF MEN, STILL GROGGY FROM SLEEP, BUT MOVING WITH PURPOSE.

They had rolled my own bird onto the tarmac. I climbed the ladder and eased into the cockpit.

But, I wouldn't need it unless shot down. Contacting the tower and putting the throttle balls to the wall, I roared down the runway, climbing and turning toward the last known vector of the enemy craft.

I looked at Rosanne sleeping scant inches from my pillow, her smell lingered; the smell of our heated passions just hours before.
Again, I felt the urge; a fire burning from within my loins, unstoppable and unquenched. The sound of her snores and wheezing were erotic.
I put the gun to my head.

The wind was still howling like a freight train headed for a cave-in at the mine. The beacon still silently made its passes over the field.
Yes, Rosie was gone and the .45 was still tucked under the pillow, but so much good had transpired.
