Last night we had to take our 16 year old beagle "Pip" to the vet to be put down. Bought the dog when our son was little, and they both grew up together. In his younger days he could catch rabbits and birds in the back yard. One day he came into the house with some feathers sticking out of his mouth - my wife freaked.
Thanks Pip for all the memories....

Most people just call them pets but they are sooooooo much more, they are like family members. They have their own personalities, routines and are always happy to see you, when the door opens their nose is showing out the door before you can get in. Their love is unconditional and faithful, moreso they are beside you wherever you go, loyality.

It is special to feel their wet nose when they are trying to get your attention and they make bad days go away.

Someday you will want to get another dog but it will never be like Pip, don't compare just enjoy it.

So sorry to hear about your lose. Making the decision to put an animal down is very hard.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Pip wasn't really a pet...he was part of the family. Putting a family pet out of their pain is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make. You will think of Pip fondly for many, many years...enjoy those memories.

I also agree that they are members of your family. We lost our beloved rottweiler Barney almost a year ago, now. I still think of him often. He staunchly protected our home, we would nickname him "sarge" as he was always the soldier on guard.

With his loss, we had him cremated. I separated the ashes and buried him in each corner of our yard with "RIP Barney 2006" written on bricks as his headstones. I have saved some more ashes which are in a heart-shaped glass dish with roses on its cover in our china cabinet next to a picture of him. And finally, I have a film canister of ashes that will go into a large flower pot, and will contain a rosebush to be the fifth "silent sentinel" in our yard. Yeah, he was family. I miss him. :cry

This link may be of some comfort. Also see the other links on this site, particularly "Dogs in Heaven" and "Farewell Dear Master". Peace be with you.

It tugs at my heart strings when I read about having to go through losing a four legged friend.. I've been there. It feels like a part of me goes with them. I wish they were here forever..

I read a message back in 2002 when we had to have Pansy put to sleep.. I'll pass along the last paragraph... It's a 4 year old's answer to why our pets lives are so short...

"People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Loosing a member of the family is never easy, they become a piece of your family's puzzle. In most cases when it's time we end up having then put to sleep and not without allot of pain and distress.

We just had to put one of our family to sleep last week....It still hurts..:(

I am sorry to hear of your loss. I had to put our 15 year old cat down a couple of years ago and it was very hard. It is not just a pet, it is like your best friend.

I remember years ago (still a teenager) when my Malamute died. We were all pretty emotional about it. My mom commented that she cried more over the dog than she did for her favorite uncle. At the time, I didn't quite understand... but now I do...

My sympathies for your loss.

My condolences to you and the rest of your family. I've had to make that decision twice in my life and I said no more.

My heart goes out to you. Last year on Groundhog's Day my 10 year old German Shepherd died on the way to the vet. I still look for her laying in the kitchen.

Gone but never forgotten.
