I love those do it yourself shows, they make it look so easy. there should be a show with real homeowners doing the samething and see how that turns out when you're totally cover in black sh*t, more black crap on your door from going in and out of the house, wife mad because when you were grabbing a beer you got black stuff all over the fridge and her clean floors. now you're mad because she's mad evenhtough you're trying your best to spruce up the house and you can't get this black crap off your jeans in a spot that you just had to scratch.... a couple times. then you're neighbour comes over to see what you're doing and you have to give him the whole story, wife is mad again when you get beer for you and neighbour cause she just cleaned floor and fridge again. a month later you are finally finished and it looks great ........at least in your eyes. a year later product cracks and peels because of improper application, hire a contractor to replace driveway...wife still brings up the whole story 20 years later... not a true story but close :)

Another good do-it-yourself site ... excellent Bob. I haven't always been a "Handy" person and was very hesitant to tackle many jobs but since I've seen half the people hired to do things are not "Seasoned skilled tradesman" as you would think you're paying for but are people with the same skills I have, sometimes even less, I figure what the heck I'll try it.

I do ask questions and / or look up info on sites like this and ask for a friends advise and help as you know but I do owe you a ton of thanks also as you unknowingly gave me so much confidence in trying to fix it first then hire someone if I can't do it. When we worked on the garage and on Heaven but especially when we took all those components apart and cleaned up and or rebuilt those components, which I had no idea what they were comprised of, and saw how basic most were and when common sense was applied 9 out of 10 could be done as a do-it -yourself. You asked questions always and asked for others input even when I thought you knew most of it you still wanted to be thorough. Methodical, sensible, calmly and rationally and if it got a bit crazy ... take a step back and re-think it .... a good teacher.

Since then I have tackled many jobs around the house and my "skills" have improved tenfold but my self confidence in facing these projects ..... no hesitation like before. I just take a step back, assess the project, research and ask questions and do what I can and if a professional is required I will get one. Yeh, sometimes :eyerole I still screw up but usually it turns out good and the quality is what I want too , nothing less. The experience has so raised my respect for the talent and knowledge known and shared by this CAC family and to watch so many take on projects that seem overwhelming but when planned and layed out systematically, it can be done. Patience, modesty to ask for advice when needed and of course the funds for the project. (A minor detail;) ).

Off topic and kinda through all my usual rambling I am just trying to say thank you for the confindence you unintensionally gave me, we will never know just how much your project saved me from all I learned. Thanks Bob and hopefully others will do the same and share a project and gain a best friend like I did.
Cheers

He makes it look easy, but I guarantee that it wouldn't turn out that nice for me! There's always something they didn't show you! Ask me how I know!

A disposable pair of shoes and a pair of old ripped jeans is a must for this job.
I like how he does it in a pair of white Khaki pants without a drop of black tar on him.;LOL
I will be doing mine this summer, so it's nice to see the variety of materials available to the homeowner. That crack filler and top bonding agent is going to come in handy in my case.:)
I made the mistake of mixing sand with sealer one year and tracked black sand in the house for a year, until I could reseal over it.
My garage floor frost heaves every year resulting in a large area of rubble in front of the concrete/maccadam interface that's in need of some serious repair now.
Thanks for the how-to.:w

I've never seen driveway gack applied with a squeegie before. I've done it with a roller, including the beer/clean floors/curious neighbour/angry wife thing... :ugh

Funny, I've never seen it done with a roller. The people that do their driveways around here always use a squeegie - or you pay someone to come in and spray it. You have to be careful with the sprayers though. I've seen driveways (mine) become extremely slippery when wet for up to a year when the mixture isn't quite right. It can be very hazardous to your health during the winter months.

I'm not touching mine. For $160 they power edge the sides, power wash the driveway, heat treat any oil spots, fill the cracks and apply sealer. That's for a three car wide driveway.

My driveway is only about 40 feet long. You need to get one of the crews that does streets to work on yours.:)

thanks for the post - I have to resurface mine this year. About 175 feet long 12 ft wide with two fairly huge areas - one in front of 3 car garage and one larger one for parking. Was going to do it last fall, but night temps are below 40 degrees and can said not to apply if below 40 during curing time. I did seal the cracks last fall, but the snow this year opened some new ones. Will probably do after Cruise Fest. Does anyone know how long it takes to do this by ones self? Took my neighbor 2 days and he has a smaller driveway area.

Is the DuPont sealer the best out there or are there better products such as Henry's?
