The death of eight students at Enterprise High School in Alabama is the stuff of every educator's nightmare. If you were to poll teachers and administrators as to the most horrible thing that could ever happen during their career, the death of a student or students would have to be one of, if not the most frequently selected choice.

I know it would be mine.

My heart went out to the families of these kids and to the community as a whole when I first heard the story. Even though I left teaching over 20 years ago, I'm still involved with my former school system through family and friends. It's in the blood, you see.

My thoughts and prayers are with all those touched by this terrible tragedy, especially the families of the students.

The past few days have been terrible for many communities because of the tornado in Alabama and the Bluffton University Baseball Team bus crash.

Very sad.

As a former teacher you know that your first responsibility is the safety of your students. Life is not always fair.

...As a former teacher you know that your first responsibility is the safety of your students....

My point exactly. I read a statement today by one of the students that a female teacher threw herself on top of the girl and a classmate in an attempt to shield them from flying debris.

I can only image their personal agony that they couldn't save them all.
