In the Beach Boys song "Shut Down", they talk of a "Stingray and four-thirteen". What are they referencing?...Engine size? Rear end?

For those of us not familiar with the lyrics:

(Thanks to http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/beach+boys/shut+down_20013813.html):

Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down

It happened on the strip where the road is wide
Two cool sharps standin side by side
Yeah, my fuel injected stingray and a four-thirteen
Were revvin up our engines and it sounds real mean

Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down

Declinin numbers at an even rate
At the count of one we both accelerate
My stingray is light the slicks are startin to spin
But the four-thirteens really diggen in

Gotta be cool now power shift here we go

Superstock dodge is winding out in low
But my fuel injected stingrays really startin to go
Im gettin the traction Im ridin the clutch
My pressure plates burnin that machines too much

Pedals to the floor hear the dual quads drink
And now the four-thirteens lead is startin to shrink
Hes powered by ram induction but its understood
I got a fuel injected engine sittin under my hood

Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down

(Me thinks, it's a Dodge 413??) ;shrug

You are correct, Sir. To be more precise, a Mopar or Chryco 413. The big gun MaxWedge prior to the 426 hemi. ;)

Hey, you forgot to mention the guitar solo, which, IMO, is one of the coolest guitar solo's ever.:cool

if you think the Barrett-Jackson prices on Vettes is high just check out the old Mopar muscle prices even the "Clones/fakes" are bringing in the big bucks.

they might not have sold as well as Chevys back in the day, but they sure do now.;LOL

Whoa whoa whoa...hold it right there, people! Is someone mixing Mopar engines in Chevy's?!?!

re: the lyrics...I've seen it as

"two cool shorts standin side by side" (from the page I looked at)
"two cool sharps..." (from Stefan's page)

and I thought that since they were talking of Stingrays, they might have been saying "two cool sharks".

---- POST EDIT ----
Oh, wait a minute... blond moment... a Stingray (car 1) and a 413 (car 2)... nevermind about my first comment... :eyerole :L

Isn't the song way before 1969 and sharks? I think it is more like 1965???

"Shut Down (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_Down_%28song%29)" was released in 1963.

However, as I was just recently made aware, it seems that some of the C2's were considered stingrays, which I never knew. I thought that name started with '68. But with that talk of the '67 being the 'last of the stingrays', I have no idea now when the name started or what years it applies to. Maybe 67Heaven can fill us in?

I THINK that the 1963-1967 were Stingrays,
the 1968 had no such designation, and 1969-? were Sting Rays.

there is some distinction about the spelling on the badges I believe that the 63-67 were "Sting Rays" ( two words) with the name being deleted in 68 which according to legend led to a huge public outcry so GM reintroduced the "Stingray" (one word) in 69 I think the badge stayed on until 78 but I am not sure, my 76 has "Stingray" on it. I'll have to hunt up a catalog and look ;LOL

I do know that the 68 has the distinction of just being a "Corvette"

I must have had it backwards. I knew that they were spelled differently and that there was one year that they were not stingrays.

Didn't the 413 go to the 426 wedge before the Hemi? Or am I showing my age again.

Yes, you are correct. There was the Stage II Wedge (displacement increased to 426) and the Stage III Wedge (head improvements) prior to the 426 Hemi, but we don't sweat the Mopar stuff around here. :D

Wait!!! Since GM may be buying Chrysler, maybe we will. ;LOL

Let it be forever noted.......................midyear (C2) Corvettes were Sting Rays (two words). ;)

My camera (and my car) proves it. :chuckle

Dual quads on a long ram manifold. Notoriously bad to set up. They were very suseptable to heat, and would come out of tune in a heartbeat. I was in the service with a guy who had the long ram setup. He eventually went to the dual quads "short ram" (offset carbs) setup which he liked a whole lot better.

Short ram... like these?

The long rams were delivered from the factory for passenger cars. The short rams not factory installed but were available from Mopar Parts. The short rams made 10 hp more than the long rams (330 versus 340). Both were cast aluminum. The year? 1960!

Notice the exhaust manifold? Chrysler built their engines wide and low which made fitting free-flowing exhaust past frame rails and steering gear problematic. The solution? Over the top!!

Camaros played around with cross-ram dual 4-barrel carbs too. The Z28 with the 302 had em!

This may be a little off topic but I found it interesting. :)

77 was the end of the Stingray era.

My 1964 Dodge Polara 500 Hi-po 383 had those same type of exhaust manifolds on it. Dang those were neat cars.

Dodge always under-rated the 383. I'm not sure why since it was one of their best engines... better than a 440, IHMO.
