...just read that *most* of the Challenge cars were DRIVEN to the track for the initial race! Can you believe that... What an amazing time that must have been and a sight to see!
Some racers were quoted by the magazine as saying it helped break-in the Challenge cars and their motors.
I would love to be able to go back in time for that! :cool

Hello --

Most were transported, but a few were driven. I remember one in particular. An Italian named Vinicio Salmi. A pretty good F3 racer in Europe. He picked up his car (No. 28) in Detroit, drove it real fast to Denver, where he did a driving school, then to Dallas for the first race. Along the way, he picked up so many tickets the cops were waiting for him to come along. He couldn't speak English. Nobody knows how he stayed out of jail. I think he started 33rd at Dallas, finished 26th. He lasted three races. His car was VIN 113496, Genoa Racing. It's one of the very few we've completely lost track of.

From the sounds of it, it may surface at a police auction to make amends on all those (old) traffic fines :eek

How many cars are out there, still unknown as to their locations / owners?

Also, how did the Powell "school cars" FIT into the picture? Were they really Challenge cars or, ????

I found a Dark Blue Met. 1988 come up for sale a few mos. ago and it was nice, but nothing other the Dymags really clued one in to it being something other than an 88 Vette.
