"OnStar will be disconnected from some cars"
"All models before 2002, and some newer, will lose service due to old technology..."
Just thought I'd post this since it's GM-related and might pique some people's interest...
That is just wrong, just plain wrong! If my wife's car was one of the one's affected I would be one seriously peeved person! OnStar should upgrade all of the cars for free with no additional commitment - period!

OnStar should upgrade all of the cars for free with no additional commitment - period! For sake of argument... "Why???" Where has it ever been said that upgrades were free? I didn't get a new phone when they switched from analog to digital networks. I didn't get a free cable box when they switched from analog to digital to Hi-Def. Etc Etc Etc...
For the sake of argument... :)

What did you do with all your beta tapes ;LOL or vynal records, I was lucky someone stole my extensive LP collection along with my Stereo just as CD's were coming into vogue I just started all over again in Cd's.
you can't even give away a three year old computer anymore.
The funny part is that GM knew the AMPS network was going offline in 2007 since 1998... or at least, they should have known. It was actually supposed to go offline in 2005 but the lack of a universal standard to replace it caused delays. Incidently, they still haven't agreed on a universal standard for digital cellular. So far, the battle seems to be going well for GSM but I'm pulling for CDMA!!

My understanding is that GSM is global and CDMA is not. I just switched to a company using GSM. Not sure if it is the new phone or the new technology but it seems to be clearer than my 18 month old CDMA phone. GSM towers are going up all over here in the midwest.

European countries are almost exclusively GSM now. Like I said, GSM is leading the way but the engineers are working on a generation III of CDMA which supposedly allows more bandwidth per consumer whereas GSM engineers are concentrating on allowing more consumers to share the same bandwidth. The old AMPS system, before it got cluttered, gave better sound transmission because the audio wasn't being encoded/decoded and each channel was given more bandwidth... until they flooded the spectrum and started causing dropouts.
It'll be interesting to see how things evolve.

For the sake of argument... :)WHY?????? I'll tell you. Because GM pushed OnStar down throats and sold it as a life saver. Also, cars last a hell of a lot longer than a cell phone. And my analog cable still works, I didn't come home one day to find that I no longer can use my TV at all. Oh yeah, I'll bet you didn't pay $30,000 for all of the cell phones and cable boxes that you've bought in your life, let alone one.
In the case of some of these cars, they were sold brand new two years ago and now have an obsolete piece of crap hanging from the windshield. Last time I checked, OnStar has never been touted as a maintenace item like tires and brakes. And if someone at "G effing M" had told these people that this would happen, I doubt they would have bought it. Hell, some of these cars are still under warranty. Holy sphincter poke Batman, some one just got screwed!
It boils down to PR. I have been one of the biggest proponents of GM my entire life, but this irritates the living tihs out of me!
Oh wait, did I say 30k, many of the earlier OnStar equipped cars are Caddilacs. You know, like the 40-50k STS. That is pure, unadulterated bull****!
Off my box.:w

WHY?????? I'll tell you. Because GM pushed OnStar down throats and sold it as a life saver. Regardless of how much you paid for it nor how much GM touted it...it was an option. I don't know if they charged different prices for different lines, but according to the article, it was only a $200 option at that.

give all the whiners their $200 back or a credit to the upgrade, I for one don't want onstar or big brother in my life anymore then they all ready are.
Okay, as so many foreign car owners and the press like to say, I guess it's just one more on a long list of things about GM vehicles that don't last very long or prematurely wear out. Good thing they didn't offer that 5 year/100k warranty back then ROFLMMFAO!
Out of here.

I don't think GM is entirely (RE:"at all") responsible for the old telecommunications networks being decommissioned.
But whatever... :D

Do you know how much talking I had to do to get them to build my 2004 Z-71 Tahoe "without" OnStar?
I also got them to remove the standard leather interior in favour of cloth. Nice and warm on my Great White North hinney. ;)
It wasn't easy. :rotfl
I've definitely got a 1 of 1 Z-71. :gap

But whatever... :DI agree with you on that. Obsolescence is a fact of life but rarely that quickly. I just think GM should share some of the cost of fixing it since they did sell it. Just because it was an "option" makes it no less their responsibility. Lots of things are optional, that doesn't mean they don't fix my power seats under warranty.:confused
It's a pretty screwed up situation and I'm sure GM will have some Naderphite in their business just like everything else.
Must nap, turkey leftovers calling.:w

I never wanted it either! I've heard that they sell info from On Star to your insurance company.
