FREDERICK -- Eight sleek, shiny Corvettes lined up side by side in front of the Golden Corral on Saturday. A casual observer probably wouldn't assume the owners were in charge of the free turkey giveaway inside.
"A lot of people are hesitant to take a ticket; they don't believe it's free," said Tom Dorsey, president of the Corvette Friends Club of Frederick.
The club gave away 42 turkeys, one every 15 minutes, by raffle on Saturday, including one "grand finale" turkey dinner, with mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the fixins, Mr. Dorsey said.
Kathy Poole, winner of the grand finale, was not available for comment Saturday, but club members said she waited three hours for her number to be called.
"Some people got highly blessed today," said Terry Amaker, manager of Golden Corral. "They didn't pick one particular person to give to, either; it was random people in the community."
The Corvette Friends started two years ago, like its name states: a group of friends and cousins who were into Corvettes decided to make their common interest official. They designed a logo, made business cards and started getting together for regular meetings.
"It's just a hobby, just a dream É some guys who always wanted a sports car as a kid," Mr. Dorsey said.
The group's 'vettes range from model years 1985 to 2006. Sometimes they race at the track in Cecil County, the only place in Maryland where private car owners can race against each other on a track.
The money they raise through dues or events always goes to charity, in one form or another, Mr. Dorsey said. The club is a designated nonprofit organization; last year, the members fed a family of 13.
"And this year we fed 42!" Mr. Dorsey said.
The next project will be to create a scholarship for high school students, or possibly sponsor a sick or special needs child, he said.
"We just feel fortunate to be able to drive Corvettes and want to give something back to the community," he said. "That's what we founded our group on; it's not just about going out riding."
