head and carb # questions
I took my valve cover off for restoration today and found casting # 462824, where for my 79 L-82 my research shows it should be a 462624. Anyone know what a 462824 is from? Also L-82's didn't have pushrod guideplates did they? Mine does but I know the engine has been rebuilt by the previous owner. Also the carb # is 17059205, where it should be a 17059210 for an L-82 4spd. Anyone know what that carb is off of? Thanks for any help ya'll can give.

This information was taken directly from the dealership parts department 1953-1982 Corvette parts and illustration catalog dated December 1983.
Carburetor Group Number is typical: 3.725
Part Numbers:
Y W/SP H/PER M.T. #17059211
Y W/SP H/PER A.T. (EXC. A.C.) #17059210
Head Group Number is typical: 0.269
Part Number:
Y (350) W/SP. H/PER. 464045 Same part number was used from 1971 through 1979
Both part numbers given for heads, 462624 and 462824 do not appear to be Corvette part numbers.
Carburetor number given 17059205 does not appear to be a Corvette part number. Also please note above correct carburetor part number for 1979 L-82 with manual transmission.
Sorry cant help with what model of car the heads came from.

Thanks guys, I may pull a valve cover again today for a closer look to see if it is a 624, not 824. I know I have the original engine as verified by the stamp on the front of the block, so I'm thinking the heads are also correct, and I just misread it. Interesting to know about the carb though.

There is a service note attached to part #464045 1971-1979 Y (350) W/SP. H/PER. The service note #5 explains that the entire lower edge of the head is scalloped around cylinder head bolts.
This may help identifying the head. I believe what they mean by scalloped is that there was extra machine work done to the head around the head bolt areas. This should help determine if in fact you have L-82 heads on your original block.

You're referencing PART numbers (which don't appear on the heads); the correct CASTING number for all '78-'82 Corvette 350 heads is 462624. The PART number 464045 listed in the P&A is a "functional replacement" for Service of '71-'79 Corvette 350's, but it wasn't used in production. The "scalloped" note refers to the cast shape along the lower outboard edge of the "lightweight" castings (which were prone to cracking).

Ok, I double checked and it looks like under closer inspection that it is a 624, not 824. Also I went further and checked out the trim tag and it shows E15, which should be May 15 build date, correct? Also anyone know anything about the guide plates on the pushrods?

Tel me about it! What a PITA was to find usable heads for my engine. One local engine builder had a set of 1980 624 heads which he claimed were not cracked, and he wanted $1,000 dollars for them.

An E15 body build date code on a '79 is December 15th, '78.

Thanks, John. Looks like my car has a birthday coming up soon. I knew is seemed strange since my car's serial # is in the 15000's of a 53000 car run, so I knew it had to be in the earlier part of the model run.

Yes, on the guide plates for a 79 L82. The manual states so and mine has them. This motor never had the valve covers off, till I bought it and the guide plates were there and still are.
