Here in St. Louis our club participates in the annual Veteran's Day Parade. It's a nice parade with lots of participants. However the parade participants probably outnumber the spectators. Kind of sad even with all the support the military has now. Not like when I was in during Viet Nam.

I've been retired from the Air Force for 13 years now but I dug out my old fatigues to wear to the parade. However the only thing that still fits is my hat!:L Darn things must have shrunk in the closet! After the parade we're going to the local VA center's spinal cord unit, which we adopted several years ago, for a car show and ice cream party with the guys in the ward.

Happy Veteran's Day to all our veterans.

It is often said that those who have died for their country have paid the ultimate price of freedom and today originated as a day to remember those who died in WWI which officially ended in the 11th month of 1918.

Every person who goes to war pays a price and many times the costs of living through a war are as precious as that of the lives that are lost. Each of you who have been in combat know what I am saying. Even if you come out of battle unscratched there is still something lost.

In Kansas back in 1953 Remembrance or Armistice Day was changed from a day to remember those who died to a day to remember and thank all of those who served. The next year President Eisenhower signed into law a bill changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day and called on all Americans to ¨observe the day by remembering the sacrifices of all of those who fought so gallantly is all of America’s wars¨.

Thank you to all who have served.

The 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month.

We all pause to reflect on what life would have been without the sacrifice of those who gave all, and those who were willing to.

My wife and I are leaving for the public ceremonies in a couple of hours. Just like every year, we'll line the parade route and applaud the old war horses who still manage to march past. We'll follow them to the local Cenotaph where the same hymns will be sung and the same poems will be read, as have been done for so many years.

Once again, I'll be touched by the sadness of the great losses and by the pride we have for such glorious men and women.

The Boer War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Afghanistan, and many, many peace-keeping ventures around the world. And to that, we add Vietnam and Iraq for your heroes too.

I count myself fortunate to live in one of the best countries in the world, thanks in great part to these sacrifices.

I thank each and every one of you who have served our countries as a member of the military. http://www3.sympatico.ca/bob-johnston/smilie-canusflag.gif

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I dropped Liam off with his Cadet Corps at 09:00 hrs. They'll muster and then parade down to the church for a brief service, then a full parade down through town and down to the cenotaph. As soon as Mrs. Mac gets back from walking the dog, we'll head down to the cenotaph for the ceremony.

I hear you, Spanishvetts... My dress serge would fit under the same modifications. One of these days, I'll have to get around to ordering a new serge.

Another Remembrance Day done. The local ceremony went well. For a change of pace, the rain held off until everything was done although there was a cold breeze which kept us all bundled up.

One young Air Cadet flaked out during the wreath laying and was caught before he hit the ground by a grizzled veteran who lowered him gently to the asphalt. Ironically, the BC Ambulance Service had just laid their wreath so they were free to provide first aid. No injuries (other than a bruised ego, I suspect) just the typical parade problem.

I was proud to watch my son on parade again. He's growing so quickly that it took me a second to recognize him as the group passed by.

Well, we did the Veterans Day parade and there were more participants than spectators. It was pretty cold and windy which may have kept attendance down. However even the newspaper today mentioned how sparce the attendance was compared to all the other parades in St. Louis.

We went to the VA Medical center and gave out sweatshirts and phone cards at the spinal cord unit we adopted. They had a karaoke set up and we brought along a couple Hooter girls. Served pie and ice cream. The guys really liked it.

One of the best photos of the day was when we entered the grounds to the VA center we all stopped to put on our flags. They had the road lined with flags which made a nice picture. I'm attaching one.

I got the opportunity to participate with other members of the Corvettes Limited Club in Bowling Green's Vets parade. Was down there for a NCM volunteers luncheon, and our club president told me that they still needed some Vettes for the parade. I originally had not signed up because I did not have a vert., but as it turns out they had enough verts., so my coupe would be OK. I said "What the heck" and did it. Had a great time. It was cold when the sun went in as we were in the staging area, but they had about a mile worth of participants, and it was great seeing and waving to all the people and old Vets lining the streets of downtown Bowling Green. Gave me a nice warm feeling to be participating in it.
