Default Gas Gauge Again

Guys
im getting the car ready for paint as my winter project.Replaced the front bumper ,removed all the trim etc.As i removed the rear bumper i noticed the rubber fuel and vapor lines should be changed,31 years old(safety item).Got everything backtogether, but now the gas gauge is pegged past the full mark when the key is off.when the key is in the on position the needle goes to the proper amount(only 1/4 to 1/2 off gas in it).i did a search and some guys had the same problem, but nobody really explained why this is happening.does anyone have a solution.thanks carmen

With the key on and the tan sender wire disconnected at the sending unit, the gauge should peg to "Full"; then ground the tan wire connector to the frame and the gauge should peg to "Empty". That will verify the gauge function and the wiring between the tank and the gauge.
