Corvette owners rev up for a resort weekend in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY -- Get ready to start your engines. It's time for the 20th annual Free State Corvette Club Weekend. The weekend's coordinators are expecting a huge turnout, and said starting Thursday, resort residents will see Corvettes all over town.
More than 700 Corvettes are expected to turn out for the parade of Corvettes, the biggest part of the weekend that takes place on Saturday on the Boardwalk. Dennis Kritzmacher, Free State Corvette Club president, is looking forward to it.
"The parade is an important part for us. It is the main reason people enter into the car shows," he said.
Kritzmacher said the parade is always a big hit -- the mayor even participates. He said it's also special because the entire weekend benefits a spina bifida foundation in Maryland and 10 families who have members with spina bifida participate in the parade.
"We raise a lot of money with this event," he said, adding that last year they raised about $35,000.
Buck Buchanan, one of the event coordinators, also mentioned the importance of the giving nature of the weekend.
"Every cent that we raise here goes to charity," Buchanan said. "It's all for a good cause and not a penny goes to the club."
So Corvette fans should get revved up and ready to go because the weekend promises to be a success. It will kick off Friday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. with check-in and registration, and a party Friday evening.
The registration fee allows participants free admission to the party, which will be at the Holiday Inn located at 6000 Coastal Highway. Prepaying registered participants can also take part in the Boardwalk Parade of Corvettes and are admitted free to the awards ceremony Saturday evening.
Additionally they are eligible to receive a car dash plaque, patch and event pin, and goody bag. The pre-registration fees are $25 per adult and $8 per child.
Festivities will start at the Inlet parking lot and include car show rallies.
Organizers are particularly excited about the poker rally where drivers follow a predetermined route, stopping at different locations to get playing cards to try and put together a winning hand.
The events aren't the only reason to come out, Buchanan said. So many different kinds of Corvettes will be there, there's sure to be something that interests everyone.
"The oldest to the newest, all the different generations, will be there," Buchanan said.
The Free State Corvette Club belongs to the National Council of Corvette Clubs of America. The Free State club is based out of Sykesville, Md. For more information, visit the Free State Corvette Club's Web site, www.freestatecorvette.com. (http://www.freestatecorvette.com/)
