TPM sensor batteries generally last 5-7 years depending upon miles driven. You are right in that range. I think the previous owner's remark about "too sensitive" was due to recurring tire pressure alarms, and he/she didn't know what to do about it. If that is the case, the only solution is to replace the sensors or deprogram the TPM system using a Tech2. Since your car is a 2000, that narrows things down considerably - the ability to add/delete the TPM system didn't come about until the new BCM was introduced in the 2001 model year.
Although the sensors are a sealed unit, at least one person was successful in replacing the batteries (perform at your own risk):

Regardless of whether you replace the batteries or the sensors, you will need to
retrain them upon installation.
