Are gas prices affecting the way you drive your Corvette?

PWRWGN1
08-17-06, 09:04 PM
Absolutely not ! I am at the point in my life where the cost of doing what I've always wanted to is not about to stop me. We use our Vette 'cept when the pickup or van is called for. Nothing like taking the long way for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs.

Jeez, I'm gonna have to break the trend and say. YES, it definetly has. I will only drive the vette once or twice a week and try to keep my foot out of it. Sorry guys but the Alero gets 23 mpg in the city, and is very run to drive around in.

I drive my vette when I feel the urge.To and from work, to the grocery store, and any other place I want. I bought mine to drive. It is not perfect or a garage queen. To use a previous quote : Over my dead body!!!:D

Been driving mine more now that prices have gone up. I average 25/26 combined out of the vette on mid grade and only 18 out of the Land Rover

geekinavette
08-17-06, 11:52 PM
I have to say yes also. My drive to work is 63 miles each way. The Vette gets about 22 hwy, the "steel car" about 30...it adds up quickly. I've also skipped out on a couple of "drive 'n dines" the local club does now and then. Just too damn expensive.

I'm with Dave. The 99 gets better mileage than our 2 Hondas or our BMW325.
I get up to 30-33 on the highway.

But I still only drive it on weekends. ;LOL

I voted 'no' since I think 'yes' would be construed as a reduction in Vette driving time. But actually I have changed my driving habits - I drive the Vette more than the Monte Carlo. At 29+ mpg highway and 21 city, it's just a tad above my 11 year old MC. And besides, weather's great, goot go topless:D.

No but I do not drive it everyday... It is built to be driven and I can only drive it so many months a year in Mich and that is what I do with it!

Not one bit. I drive my 92 daily commuting to work. Unless its raining or a dust storm, Im driving it. I even averaged almost 27 mpg on the last tank, a lot of it was at 65-80 mph on a cruise to the high country, with several full throttle bursts. What a great car to drive the mountain roads with.

I am heading to Long Island NY in the morning with my beautiful 1984 26 MPG Corvette. I know the 84s are not the most sort after, but I really respect and enjoy driving her. Also have a 79 that is in the process of restoring as a non numbers matching, terrible fuel mileage but fast car that I will also drive at times reguardless of fuel costs. :)

I'm just trying to cut down in general. All three of us commute to work and our gas bill has tripled in the last 6 months or so. That said, when the sun is out and the roads are dry, best not get betwixt me and the open road! :w

Though the cool and suave answer to post here would be something to the effect of, 'no I continue to drive like I stole it cause nobody is going to tell me what to do and I got tons of money anyway....' However, in total butt naked honesty, I do drive it a little more, lets say, efficient (sp?). This is mostly because I want to keep my money in my pocket rather than carelessly giving to the oil companies (It's the principal of the thing, ...yes I know it sounds so cliche-ish)

Oh I still have fun with it, but when I can, I find myself being more efficient ...more efficient burn outs...more efficient accels to 90 on the on ramps...ect,ect ect.

Most not Vette owners can't believe that the C5's and C6's are economy cars. My Z06 would get 25 mph if I kept my foot out of it. More SMILES per mile.

Hell no! I'm broke at the moment and just don't care... besides when I really get in a pinch I just hop on the ZX6R and boogie down the road. I just got the 68 vette licensed though and had to take it through inspection which was clear on the other side of town.... did visibly notice the gas gauge moving but what the hell! Yes, gas prices have changed my driving style. Sold our GMC 4x4 Envoy for a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. We use the Escape as a daily driver.
When driving the Z06, I don't jump on it as much. Still enjoy driving the Vette every time I push the start button.

Funny thing, fuel prices haven't change how I drive the Corvette but they have affected how the other cars we have are driven.

When I drive the Corvette, I just let it do its thing. The Vette is my medication, to worry about fuel would ruin the dose. :D

Last year I posted on the forum the day that I put the first $100 tank of gas in the Vette.:ugh

Today I hit another milestone; the first $50 tank of gas in one of the bikes.:crazy

It is costing about $140 to fill up the Vette these days but I use about $10,000 worth of gas at the track per month so there is no problem to keep the toys topped up when I am in town. On road trips it is beginning to hurt but I have no intention of changing the life style yet.:w

I have to drive just as much as always. The price don't effect how much I drive but it effects other areas of my life, slightly. I am more concerned about supply than I am the price. I may have to drive my old pickup more.It runs on LP gas and the last fill was about $1.90 per gal and the mileage is about the same as gasoline.

1.30€/liter = about $5.90/US gallon. That is with my discount of 8% for the quanity I buy at the track. At a gas station it is well over $6. Spain has the lowest price gas in Euroland France, Germany, etc. are at least $0.50/gal higher.:W

Last year I got 159 passes on my DRs that's about 40 miles and I drove out to Beaver Springs once, about 200 miles. Maybe I should look for a longer lasting tire.:D

According to my instant MPG I get 3 to 4 MPG at full throttle running down the track. Couple that with the 60 mile trip to and from the track and I usually get about 17 miles to gallon for that tank of gas. I've got a 2:59 rear.

No!! Now, I don't drive the vette much, in two years I put 4,000 miles on her. Last fill up was $50.00, and that should last a little while. But when I want to drive her I do, no hesitation because of gas prices. My wife drives a Durango with the 5.7 hemi (she wanted an SUV, liked the Durango, so me being me said, "OK Honey, but we gotta get the HEMI"), I won't even list the MPG that gets, but we haven't stopped driving that either.

My '04 Z06 consistantl gets 25 to 26 mpg (91 octane premium) on my 95 mile round trip drive to work - would even get better if I kept my foot out of it. I filled it up this morning and was getting 29 mpg when I pulled in to work 40 miles later - despite one 120 mph burst as I blew by a few slower cars on the viaduct right before work. Going home usually drops the mileage somewhat since I drive through downtown Kansas City. While the mileage isn't as high as my main daily driver (35 - 36 mpg on regular), the difference in actual cost is pretty minimal.

I voted no difference.

I suspest that folks that can afford to own a Corvette in the first place have a bit more discretionary income than most folks. I also suspect most of us do not use them as a daily driver. So, gas prices, who cares. When I take my 71 roadster out I put my foot in it and enjoy what the vette was enginered to do. I have no idea what my gas milage is and don't care. If I burn a tank of gas on an outing its part of the cost of entertainment. What bothers me more is the demise of the wave, especially the c4,5 and 6 owners. The drivers of the older vettes always return the wave. SAVE THE WAVE:w

Hmmm, the "wave" again. What I've noticed out in Colorado is that it isn't so much of a car generation but a driver generation. Those of us that have been around for a few years (55 and still not grown up) wave no matter what year we're driving. Seems like a lot of the under 30 set don't have a clue/are too cool/don't recognize older Vettes/ or were never told about the "wave"

My 89 is a daily driver, don't care about gas prices, and I get at least two waves a day!

On the Hiway at 70 MPH in 6th the Tach is on 1,800 RPM, on a long trip where I can leave the cruise control on 26MPG is the best it has done. My guess you have 3:08 or 2:78 rear gears. Top speed in 5th at 6,400 RPM was 167 MPH with my Magella GPS.

Absolutely not ! I am at the point in my life where the cost of doing what I've always wanted to is not about to stop me. We use our Vette 'cept when the pickup or van is called for. Nothing like taking the long way for a gallon of milk or a dozen eggs.

We used to take short cuts before the Vette, but now it is the long way around. So many miles, so little time.
The Vettes are our economy cars even with 93 octane. Sure beats the Silverado, Suburban or Tahoe. It gripes me that some places are charging 35 to 40 cents per gallon more than 87 octane when it used to be 20 cents.

Corvette miles are properly termed "Smiles". The Z06 C5's get 19 in town and 28 on the road, except for my Z06 since I keep my foot in it. The 6th speed really helps on a road trip. My last trip back from Bowling Green was 24.8 sph (smiles/gallon) but I took all the back roads to enjoy the countyside.

In Socal all gas is unleaded; My 81 runs ok on Regular grade with 87 octane. Some of the non-brand gas may cause pinging or dieseling from the carbon deposit build-up. You may want to check the internet site http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aabyb100401.htm which gives some insight into use of higher octane gasolines.

It's more of a time vs. gas price thing. If you take the car out for a weekend jaunt what could it cost? It certainly doesn't cost more than a good dinner out on the town. It could be worse- get a boat.

Now that gas prices are getting more in line with reality again I hope this topic is not relevant again for a long time. $2.09 here and $1.99 in Toledo yesterday. It's been dropping nearly every other day for the last couple of weeks.

Thanks for link for the c6 our 98 (93 ron) is recommanded (required for Z06).
Gas price never will stop me to drive my Vette. I use it only for meeting with my club Corvette Club de France ( I'm the webmaster) http://corvetteclubfrance.com and for vacation. arround 8000 miles per year.

Hi eccm,
Where in France are you located?
We will be driving the Vette through Western France next week on a Huiters & wine run.
We are planning on spending a night in Hendaye and another in Marennes then on to Champtoceaux where we have a friend who owns a Vineyard.
On the way back we will stay in Arachon.
We will be pulling a trailer behind the Corvette because there is no room for wine in the car and we usually bring back 100 or so cases whenever we drive through France. So if you see a dirty brown C4 dragging a wagon full of wine it is probably us.

We will spend about 1500€ on gas and a hell of lot more on wine… ¨I wonder what the vintners buy worth half so much as what they sell.¨

It is $2.06 now in places in Ft.Worth. Better but not under $2.00 yet. We can only hope. I still drive my Vette to work every day.

Although I don't drive mine every day or weekend I do drive it when I feel the urge to get it and go!!!!!

Yeah, me too! but I was in a accident at work and hurt my back, so overall i don't drive it as much as i want to. But if I'm going to be going on a long trip, say 500 miles or more the price of gas is still the price of gas. so I wouldn't let it hold me back from enjoying the Vette. I bought it to drive it and that's what I'm going to do! It's as sin to let a car like this sit inside the garage.:L

My best friend bought a 75' vert back in 76. We spent some good times (road trips) in this car for the first year or so and then he parked it. In 88' he ordered and received a brand spankin' new 88' vert. Both of these cars are still in his possession and have approx. 23,000 miles. Heck, the 75' has only been driven 10 miles in the last 10 years. Both of them are beautiful show winner cars but I've never understood how he can just let them sit. I'm wearing mine out! :Steer

I had a 79 that I restored from the frame up, won second flight at a NCRS meet in 03. But I never drove it all that much and I noticed it would take a few trips in the season to get the car to run right. maybe two hundred miles or more. otherwise it felt sluggish and idled poorly. Once it had been run up the turnpike to NYC or so it ran like a top. They're meant to be run.

The vette is my high mileage vehicle! The Trailblazer SS (with the same LS1 engine) get's 16-16.5 around town if I go VERY easy on it. The vette gets 19 even if I goose it now and then. That said, I have gotten better at combining errands into one trip, and I don't take the vette out as often I used to.

The best mileage I get is in the Z06. A round trip from GA to Carlisle average 29 mpg. Sixth gear most of the way. Love it and don't care what the fuel costs except that the FAT cats are getting the money.

Heck no! Between the payment and insurance, do you think that I am going to let the price of gas keep me from driving my Vette? And as long as we are all talking about milage, 18 and 26 in the Vette', and 12 and 16 in the truck. Like I need an excuse to drive her anyway! My daily driver 99' Coupe was in a minor accident back in November, and I just finally got my appointment to have her fixed. Since that time, she sat while I drove my 4X4 Silverado back and forth to work. With the gas prices the way they are, I miss getting twice the gas mileage. It costs me around $30.00/day now for fuel to drive from home to work.

I put some gas in the boat yesterday. It was 3.87 for middle grade at the marina. It needed about 75 gallons. That figures to about $290.00.

Gas has been bouncing around, flirting with 4.00/gal for Chevron premium in Vancouver Washington, for the last few days. I havent seen anywhere selling it for 4.00/gal, but I imagine that with Memorial Day just around the corner, it will be happening soon. I'm glad my new job is only 2 miles from my house. If I still had a 67 mile round trip commute to do, I would not be able to afford the gas! As for joy rides, I think I might have to limit them a little. :ugh

A barrel of oil passed 123.00 today. If it hits 150.00 we're talking at least 6.00 a gallon for 87 octane!!!

I don't care what anybody says, EVERYBODY will be effected. Even my motorcycle won't get as many miles on it. Fortunately, I work out of my house and live on a lake so I don't have to move if I don't want to (except for groceries) and that is getting crazy.

Not made any difference to me at all; it gets better mileage than anything else I got anyway, the hitch is I do put high grade fuel in it so maybe it's a wash! But I don't drive it much at all through the week, I have a company car and that fuel is absolutely FREE!!!

But I drive it still every chance I get, before too long in my area it will be covered in the garage anyway so everyday is closer to putting it up for the winter!

Hasn't made a difference. My wife and I still drive our cars the same. We still ride our bikes (bicycles) to the local shops or post office when we don't need to carry much.

I did a comparison between E10 and full gas a couple of months ago and found that I did get better mileage with full gas. Comparing the better mileage versus the better cost of E10, I determined that E10 needed to be around 15 cents cheaper to make it a better deal for me. Now with gas prices following the stock market, I don't have a clue what the break even point is. So, I'm still using full gas from a local Philips 66 and I'm happy.

hotmtrsports
10-10-08, 04:11 PM
I'm actually using the car more than I usually do. It's awsome to drive and the mileage is the best one of the cars we own!!! My personal best (for a 1/2 hour ride a few weeks ago was 31 MPG...no lie!!) I know the long term average would be about 27 or so, but it was still cool to see that. Why doesn't this get advertised to it's fullest around the USA. The fuel economy could actually bring ownership down at least $100.00 per month compared to many other vehicles out there!

We actually did a foliage ride with a few other Corvettes last weekend and it was a blast!

This Sunday, we are going to New Hampshire for a day of riding with a few Corvette buds.

AND with oil going lower, we are seeing gas prices under 3.00 and hopefully going to 2.50 per gallon in a few weeks. :)

I am glad to hear your gas is under $3, here in SoCal we running in the $3.50+ range; unless you can get gas at one of those large volume wharehouse stores, for around $3.40 range. I am afriad the $2.50 days are only in the history books, on the west coast.

My C-5 will get into the high twenties if I drive it right and keep my foot out of it; which is pretty rare, but we are below $3.00 a gallon now; of course subject to change any minute :L

But then again if you use the high grade gasoline doesn't really make it cheaper to operate but if I have to worry about that I shouldn't have a Corvette I guess :eyerole
