Tom Bryant happened across a beautiful example of what looks like a real 1967 Impala SS427.
I won't go into my long story again, but these cars are NOT Super Sports. The SS427 was a separate, special, and very rare model.

Sweet. I had almost forgotten the relative simplicity under the hood from those days.... As a teen, I had a 66 Chevelle SS big block (396). "Back in the day....."
$69,500.... hmmm vintage auto or Z06? :W

I love that car. Wish I had an extra 70k laying around. There was a white '67 Super Sport with 427 badges at the Kruse auction claiming to be a SS427 but it wasn't. Didn't fool the bidders either. A friend of mine and I were both going to order one of these but they dropped the 425hp option for 1967. The 385 was all you could get. In '68 the 425hp engine was back but the car wasn't as cool. He got a SS396 Malibu and I got a new 442.

You could get the 427/425hp L-72 in the '67 SS427, but you had to have one of these to get one (like mine had) :D

:w 1967 Caprice with the rare hidden headlight option.
I know you're having fun, Tom. Hidden headlights were a '68 & '69 option, and were not available in '67..........BUT THEY SURE SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!
This car is actually a '67 Impala (non-Super Sport), and it's just beautiful. So now I'm thinking, a '67 "tribute" SS427 with hidden headlights. Oh baby. :naughty:
The quest for the Holy Grail continues. ;)
67HEAVEN
02-26-08, 12:38 PM
So, looking at that beautiful grill, the next step is to wonder how the doors (if they are doors ;) ) are actuated.
The '68 doors were actually two piece. The face pivotted up and the underside of the upper hood surround moved out of the way.
A whole different method would be called for here. :ugh
I wonder if there's even room in there for headlights, with the covers in place, like there is on later years. Maybe the black area (between the horizontal lines) could be fashioned out of smokey plexiglass, so they wouldn't have to move, and halogens (or similar) bulbs mounted in behind. :D
Next winter, when I'm up to my ying-yang in snow again (but the garage is complete) I could mock up some pretend doors out of plexiglass to experiment with. If you drive by the garage and see a weird light show late one evening, you'll know what I'm doing. ;LOL
randomize27
02-26-08, 10:49 PM
I've often thought about mounting a pair of halogen work lights behind the grill on my truck with a separate switch to turn them on.
Then I'd have low beams, high beams, and OH MY GOD I'M BLIND! beams.
Also a pair behind the cab on top of the tool box facing backwards.
I'm a bit annoyed with those who don't know what a dimmer switch is of late.
All this talk of Impalas... I saw one go by on a flatdeck today. A red 63 convertible, by the look of it. Very nice looking ride.

That Canadian-built '68 SS427 again brings into question whether the T-83 hidden headlights were available on cars other than the '68 or '69 Caprice.
I decided to post this information here since it seems there is also a debate that the Canadian Impalas could receive this option.

After looking them over, I agree that the '69 may be the better choice, or maybe I should consider electric motors rather than vacuum operated.
Or, if I make the doors out of smoked plexiglass (with the grill cross bars in the correct place) I could just mount some million-candle-power bulbs in behind and leave the doors where they are. :D
Tom, is there any indication of different rad surrounds between the standard-grill and hidden-headlight cars?
Tom Bryant

I'll look. That was one thing I was thinking about but I forgot to check when I was scanning pages. Do you remember that our ex moderator, Chris McDonald, used Feiro headlight door motors on Killer ('69 Corvette)? The compact size just might be an easy way to do the doors on the '67 with some custom levers and rods.

And, Tom, I'm guessing that the supports were lower on both sides to allow for the rotation-up-action of the doors between the support and the underside of the hood.
I'll have to see if I can find a T-83 '68 or '69 to look at under the hood.
Meanwhile, although there are no hidden-headlights on this '68 (with '67 Rally centres), it's sure worth a peek.......... CLICK (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUSRz8031dQ)

When vacuum-actuated are working correctly, I prefer them over electric. I like the snappy open and close action. However, one problem with vacuum is the difficulty in operating them when the engine has an extreme overlap cam....not enough vacuum. On a milder engine, they work great, assuming proper lubrication and no vacuum leaks.

I think the body is in the woods behind someone's house, well ravaged by rust. I asked Dad about it years ago. Time to get this thread going again. Saw a red with black vinyl top SS427 at the Kruse Auction yesterday and took pictures. I'll post them as soon as I get my camera downloaded.
In the car sale corral I also spoted a barn find 1963 light yellow (original) Impala SS with a 409/425 4 speed and factory tach. It had 36,000 miles, some minor rust and the numbers on the block matched the body vin. I think the poster said it came out of Tennessee and had been setting a long time indoors. Got a couple of pics of this one too. They were wanting 30k. Seems like a lot but where are you going to find another real one that hasn't been molested, restored or is a made up car? The only mod to the car was some add on guages and all of the factory parts were there and in good condition.

I didn't think they were good looking cars back then and I still don't. Only the Camaro was IMHO good looking after 1967. I'll take a 56, 55, or 57 Be lair or impala any day. Or an fast back mustang.:upthumbs Are you guys forgetting how cheaply those cars were built, and how much they rattled after a few thousand miles?

That sounds like a great car. The twin-4bbls look great between those 409 heads.

For some reason I'm having trouble with email notification. Some I'm getting 4 or 5 days late and others not at all. Anyway, I downloaded pics today so now I'll see if I can get them posted. I'm using a new HP Photosmart program that I haven't tried yet.
Well, I can't attach anything. It times out. I think it's my wireless provider since I can't upload to Shutterfly either. I'll try again later.

Attachment attempt again.
Failed. Keeps uploading until it says done then sayrs waiting on CAC web site, then says page not found.
I'm attempting to upload my entire Auburn album to Shutterfly using the power uploader plug-in so we'll see what happens. If I'm successful I should be able to link to the images.

Here's one. I have a few more but it's slow going. I think I found what my problem is but I have to talk to my son to be sure.

The 409. I didn't notice the Hurst shifter or the hood pins untill I looked at the picture. I guess I was too busy looking under the hood checking the numbers.

This appears to be a frame off but I didn't get on the ground to look underneath. It would look nice settng in that new garage next to the '67.
