View Full Version : A V-6 Powered Sting Ray?!?!?!
I was cruising around on Motor Trend's web site when I came across this: rumors of a v-6 powered Sting Ray! (http://www.motortrend.com/future/concept_cars/112_0602_chevrolet_kappa_sting_ray/)
My first thought is bad GM. The Sting Ray has always been assocated with Corvettes, and I think it should stay that way. I like the idea of a V-6 stuffed into a Kappa chassis, but call it something original.

Not a fan of the name cross over. Come up with something else.
But 255 horsepower in a 2,800 pound car? Might be interesting......

I agree.
If GM seems to have its heart set on recycling names, then why not call it the Cheetah?

Not to change the topic and the thread link in the first post mentions both of these, the Pontiac - Soltice and the Saturn - Sky. I have seen both up close and IMHO the Sky beats the Soltice hands down for styling and general overall quality appearance. I am not a fan of Saturn, but the Sky and their SUV brand has made me notice that at least Saturn is trying to do something for market share.
Without searching I do not know how Saturn falls into/under GM's umbrella, but ever how it is, or even if there is a relationship between GM and Saturn. I have to ask this, GM are you paying attention and maybe taking notice.
I am also fully aware that sport cars will not solve auto manufactures markets.
My unasked for $0.02
No to the Sting Ray name on a solstice Kappa based Chevy .
I believe Chevy should get a stretched kappa chassis for a small 2 + 2 coupe using the very inexpensive 3.9 liter 270 hp V6 as its sole powerplant...
Would be a winner. IMO

I recently took a Solstice for a test drive. The car was way to small for my 6'6" 260lb self, but it was a fun car to drive. Before I took the Solstice for a drive though, I did check out the Sky at a Saturn dealership. the front end is much nicer than the Solstice, and over all I would have to agree, that the Sky is a prettier car.

About 10 years ago, 275 was an awesome figure out of an 8 cylinder LT1 in the F-body.
I really like the number 270 out of a V6.
It seems so... Grand National-ish.:L
My first inclination was heck no to the name recycling. Yes, the "sting ray" name has a huge history and yes it's going to rub some the wrong way but considering how fast that car will be with the V-6, I'm leaning towards it. And considering how an owner will be able to get it well over 300hp with relatively easy mods, it'll be blowing the doors off of a lot of Vettes.

And, doors off of the Solstice and Sky... and... I think it is a good idea if they can keep the price point down. :upthumbs
Wait. I thought that the ultra fast, ultra expensive Corvette (the Blue Devil) was rumored to be called "Sting Ray?" I can see it now, Chevy decides to name EVERY vehicle "Sting Ray" from now on.
At any rate, calling something that is not a Corvette Sting Ray seems a bit odd too me.

Good point, Tossin. If they use the Sting Ray name on this car what will they call the Blue Devil? Perhaps ZR-1?
Look at it this way, we have discussed on this site numerous times how the younger generations are more and more dissenchanted with American power. We have discussed how a big part of that is due to the lack of affordable entry-level cars being produced by GM and Ford with any semblance of performance. If this Stingray brings even a few back and leans them towards one day owning a Vette, bring it on.

Call it anything but the Stingray!

Sting Rays are Corvettes. Imagine the disappointment when you find out the numbers matching Sting Ray your buddy found in a barn was one of these.

I'm with DarkShark, I like bringing back the Cheetah name. Leave the Sting Ray/Stingray name for the Corvette. If they want to recycle names, the Monza, Vega, and Chevelle are still out there. Leave the flagship alone!

How about Corvair? ;) :L Or Chevette (Shovette). Could be called shove-it. ;) :L
Just as an update to this "controversy" it has now been publicized that other cars sharing the platform of this car are smacking around $50k Porches (intentional misspelling;)) for half the price. And these cars have a 4-banger with less power and far less torque than has been proposed for the V-6 powered Chevy version. Like I said in my earlier post in this thread, these things are going to be scaring the shez out of more than a few Corvette drivers, and assaulting Rustangs like nobody's business.

No way for a Sting Ray or StingRay. Cheetah would be OK. Or you could call it the Shark. Whatever, but NO Sting Ray.;squint: Heck, call it a C2.....just like the Hummer series.

I dunno.
A 260-270 horsepower V6 might not cut it. It certainly won't be class leading. Nissan has a 300 horsepower 3.5 liter V6 in the Z. Lexus also has a 300 horsepower 3.5 V6 in the new IS350. And these cars are ~$35k. Acura also has a 300 horsepower 3.5. Even Volkswagen has a new direct injection 3.6 liter V6 with 280 horsepower.
GM really needs to get a 300 horsepower V6 available. Possibly a high output direct injection version of their new DOHC 3.6?
