84 Corvette Engine Changes

I am about to buy an 84 corvette. They normally have a cross fire setup. I was hoping you could tell what it looks like this guy has done to the engine and is it better or worse in performance and reliability.

All it looks like is a carb conversion, which isnt a particularly bad idea, lots of 84 owners do it. I cant see any headers, but he's repainted his valve covers.

Payoff would be in power gains, fewer crossfire reliability issues; drawback might be idle quality, fuel mileage...typical carb stuff

I heard this a good idea because of injection problems. What sort of horsepower do you think it would put out now instead of the original 205hp.

250hp would be nice. Get me on par with the 91 corvettes then. Although I don't have to worry about being on par with vettes here in oz its more holdens and fords. I just hope its reliable too.

84 are great cars. Mine is 300,000 miles old on original crossfire engine.

what reliability issues? It's all about maintainance...even a run down engine with a carb will have reliability issues.

Have you replaced your timing chain? If you haven't, you're in for a sudden surprise! There's no telling when it will jump a tooth, but be assured . . . it WILL happen without any warning. The engine will be running just fine . . . and then BANG!! You've got the valves tangled up with the pistons . . . not a nice situation!!!

(Mine went at 220,000 mi.)

My '84 has had its share of built-in surprises. I guess it's because they were so new and all the bugs weren't worked out yet.

The only Cross-fire problem I've had is a new TPS. Once that was dailed in, it runs fine. The biggest trouble areas were power steering and cooling.

I went through the whole power steering system one piece at a time as they started leaking or failed outright until it was all new. But it still leaked. Then one day, the bracket that holds the entire mechanism to the block simply cracked off. The new bracket had casting reinforcements right across all the places where the original bracket split. Since then, not a single leak or problem, so I assume the bracket vibrating on a split was the cause until it failed and I replaced it with the improved part.

The other problem is overheating and I'm still working on it. I have a new radiator (old one exploded ... literally) I replaced the engine temperature switch and fan relay and I just put in a new fan from a later year with bigger blades and motor. But the fan just won't come on when it's supposed to, so I'm putting in a jumper switch from the battery to the motor so I can turn it on and run it when I please.

I really love the car ... it's in tip top shape and a very strong runner ... but I might spend less time under the hood with a later year. On the other hand, I think '84 is a unique car and may become very collectible in another ten years. The more we modify these gems, the less their value as a milestone Corvette. Any thoughts?
