My Corvette(s):
1965 convertible
Default Block casting number for 68 327

In reading Corvette by the Numbers, the 3914660 was used in the 68 327/300hp. Also listed is the 3914678. If accurate, what are the occasions that the 660 was used?

Thanks,

Bill

NCRS books show it as base engine only and unverified for time period.

Have you found one?

My "Chevrolet Small-Block V-8 ID Guide" says 68 - 69 327, 250 Hp, Truck.

My "Corvette Parts Interchange Manual" does not show the 4660 number as an interchange. It does, however, shows the 3914678 as the block for a 1968 327 engine.

I have a 3914678 block, but it has an RPO stamp of "YC". This is a C-10 through C-25 truck block. The advantage is that it has a taller deck and thicker walls, so that it can be bored-over beyond 0.060".

So technically, the 4660 is a 327 block, but not used on muscle or sports cars.

Cool! Does the rest of the motor ID check out, casting date, stamp pad numbers and broaching, etc.?

My NCRS Pocket Guide shows the 4660 block as base engine only for a short period of time early. 4678 block after that.

I suppose the question is "What is "early"? Is this block in a '68? What's the VIN and time/build date?

Got a casting date for the 4660 block?

No difference in deck height - all small-blocks had exactly the same deck height (9.025"), regardless of application; only the big-block was produced with two different deck heights.
