Default convertible top installation

I am rebuilding the top on my 72 convertible. I am done with the frame and have installed a new tack strip kit and the side weatherstrip. Since I started with a bare frame I am not quite sure how all the pieces go and in what order they are installed. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. This is not something anyone wants to mess up....too expensive! I know I can do it, I just need some pics and advice.........Thanks in advance.....

Al Knoch has a videotape that will provide exactly what you're looking for.

Thanks for the information. If anyone out there has experience with top installation, please jump in here.

Get the video.

I've put on several C3 tops. First step is to detach the rear bow, and install the top to the bow, using the weatherstrip and nylon cord.

From there, it's just measuring, tacking, tugging, and glueing.

The measurements between the bows is critical. The placement of the pads is critical too.

TOO complex to post here, honestly. Get Al Knoch's video.

The MOST important step BEFORE you put the cloth on is to get the windows of the car to fit the top frame. You can fool for hours/days adjusting the top frame and the windows in the doors to get a good window fit.

Can't adjust it after the cloth is on. Chuck

Take it somewhere that's done them before. It's a nightmare if you've never done it. I would rather pay the money.

I am determined to do this myself. If I can gut and install a new interior I can install this top. I emailed Al Knoch.....no reply. Emailed again........no reply....If anyone wants to rent their tape to me I would be happy to pay.

Default CC has a rental DVD

Corvette Central has the Al Knoch top installation Video, in DVD format. They charge $50, and will refund you $35 when you return it.
I know this, as last week i got one from CC, and have it in my posession at this moment.

I hope it goes easy for you. Only one other suggestion. Most of these tops are pretty tight. You might want to lay it out in the sun to make it more pliable when you install it.

You fellows have given me a good start. I work on my 72 15 minutes here, an hour there, and maybe won't touch it for a week, then spend an afternoon on it. I probably won't have the top on until the end of summer. First thing I need is someone to help hold the frame to the mounts. Thanks and keep the advice coming!

Adjust the top frame and weatherstrips to the side glass FIRST, before you even think about installing the top skin; it's too late to do that after you have the skin installed. Get the video.

Got her all done. Took about a week (I work slowly) off and on. No major mistakes and it looks pretty good. I wish I knew then what I know now, but isn't that always the case when you do something for the first time? Once I got the rear bow done the rest went well.

I'm going fishing in Ontario now but maybe when I get back I can put up some pics. At any rate, now I'm a little knowledgeable about something else.
