View Full Version : Welcome to the Military Members Forum
Starting this forum is actually something I've been thinking about for quite some time.
We have a lot of members here that are both Corvette owners and in the U.S. Military. Many of them are either currently serving over in Iraq and Afghanistan, or have done so in the past.
We usually get one or two new members registering everyday who happen to be in active duty.
So, as a result, I thought I'd start this forum and give them a common area to meet and talk among themselves.

Great idea Rob, another reason I love this site. It is filled with great people who respect others and administrators who have a great regard for their customers. I probably will stay with this site even after I have to stop driving.
Thanks.:w
Rob, I echo the above posts!!!
That's one of the great things about this site. It's always evolving, thanks to the admin.

Rob,
Great idea! Thanks for providing some of that valued space for us old vets. Not unlike the military, the CAC shares some of those same core values and its very much appreciated.

Hey Rob, Thanks, I am an SFC serving in the U.S. Army in Baqubah, Iraq. I love my Country, I love the U.S. Army, I love Corvettes, and I love my wife especially for buying me a 2003 Z06 while I was home on mid tour leave from here in March. Of course I hade to sell my 67 Coupe to get it but it was worth it. Thank you very much for this Forum. I have been a member of Chevelles.com and some others, but this is the first I have ever seen with a special section expecially for the Military. I responded to the quote of the day and again I appreciate the response. I am stationed at FT Carson in Colorado Springs CO and my wife and I are really looking forward to the big Fest in June. Thanks again.

Thanks for your service Steve; I was in the US Army in the mid to late sixties our Iraq was of course Vietnam, the calvary road into battle on the modern day horse; the great Huey. And I give a lot of credit to her bring me back home safe many times and the last time of course was the final flight that relayed me back to the good ole USA. Take care, watch your back, don't take any wooden nickles. Gods speed back to the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA we're very proud of you and all the men and women of the US Military and their families for their sacrifices to this greatful nation.

Thanks, Rob. It's a good idea. I belong to a motorcycle forum (fireblades.org) and the military part of the forum (called "Motor Pool") is limited to active duty and former military personnel. You have to apply to join it. Once you are accepted, a pair of dogtags shows up beside your avatar on your posts. It would be nice if we had something like that here.

Boy the B-52 is awesome to say the least; sure would like to get at least a 8X10 or bigger glossy of this air craft in action; got any idea where something like this can be obtained? The KC=135's were tankers weren't they? Welcome home and thanks for :pat your dedicted and long service to this country.
Take care,
Bill :w
Thanks, hoosierdaddy, for the kind words. The KC-135A is basically the same aircraft as the B-707 commercial passenger aircraft. K - tanker, C - Cargo.
I was a crew chief on one that was made in 1956. They have put modern turbofan engines on them since.
I was a crew chief on a 1959 B-52G
The B-52 had her maiden flight on April 15, 1952. They say that they are now projected to be used until 2040.
If you want some photos of B-52's just google B-52D, B-52G or B-52H. The H is the only one of the series that is flying, thanks to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT). They are only located at Barksdale AFB in Shreveport La and Minot AFB in Minot ND. I served on both of those bases at one time or another.
Here are a few photos of the BUFF and the tanker: :)

Just an amazing aircraft, I had some experience with the aftermath in Southeast Asia in the mid-sixties., those things just rained bombs and I also felt a little safer going in where they had been earlier. They say the cong feared that air craft more than anything else. couldn't see it and hardly nothing would reach it! I also was a Crew Chief on the Huey Helicopter Gun Ship, door gunner and anything else that came down the pike! Started with the 101st Air Borne; ended up with the 1st Cavalry/Air Mobile Division. I never did like jumping out of a perfectly flying airplane as they say. It's a long story but mostly I only did for the extra pay and there was no way to keep jump status and flight status at the same time, so I moved over to helicopters.
Thanks; I have looked at the B-52 on the internet just haven't found that picture that I was looking for yet.
Take care and keep it on the alley,
Bill :w
What kind of B-52 photo are you looking for? I don't have a vast collection, but I do have some. Mostly on paper, but you never know.:)

I've never served in the military. We eligible for draft during the Vietnam era but was never drafted.
To all those currently serving, I can tell you how grateful I am that you guys are standing watch some where in the world or killing Islamo-fascist terrorists in Afganhistan or Iraq.
To all those who are retired-military....thanks for serving...thanks for making sure I have the freedom to enjoy the Corvette hobby.

Hey hoosierdaddy,
Try this link to the AF Images website: http://www.af.mil/photos/index.asp?galleryID=15&page=1. Didn't go through them all but there are several pages of B-52 pictures. There are pictures of all kinds of other aircraft if you just go to www.af.mil/photos (http://www.af.mil/photos). Look along the right side of the page for all the different categories.

I would like to find pictures of the B-52 in action over the skies of Souteast Asia (Vietnam) during the mid-sixties era. I am looking for a picture of good enough quality to have enlarged and framed for my office, preferably colored and again of that era. I have only ever saw one of these on the tarmack and it was absolutely over whelming to say the least. They flew so high up that actual action photographs are not that common. I have some but yet to find that one that I want to invest in having done up right.
Thanks for asking,

There is a huge rock in a gravel pit on Hwy.25 in rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing its character many times.
A few months back, the rock received its latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed. The artist, Ray "Bubba" Sorensen is in the first photo.

I had seen this before; awesome just breath taking; what a talent, what a gift and tribute to the hero's past and present.

I think it's cool to have a military section....You never know who's served time in the military.
Currently I'm an active duty Army SFC stationed at Camp Shelby, Ms.
Anyway good luck to all that are serving in Iraq/Afgan. You are in my prayers. Retirees I'm next to join the ranks...

... the Air Force Academy. Even this old sailor was impressed..You all would have been really loved seeing one of the old football rallies we used to have, at some noon meal formations. As 250-300 Firsties (Seniors) owned Corvettes, bought every year from primarily Williams or Daniels Chevy in COS, the guys would drive the football team members around, circling the terrazo while the Cadet Wing would cheer and wave. I got to drive a friend's white '69, with an L-88, in one of the last held, I think. As the Vettes climbed in price, many cadets could no longer afford them and switched to the less expensive F-bodys, Jeeps, etc.
I served on the Class of 1973 car Committee and chaired the Autosports Club. We held a lot of autocrosses, running our Vettes, TR-6s, the occasional Lotus, etc. on courses set up in one of the lower parking lots. I even arranged a visit for a lecture/Q&A session with John Greenwood.
Many of the cadets, who, in those days, were forbidden to own a car until they became Firsties, upgraded their cars with BFG T/A Radials and aftermarket wheels. Some also bought Hooker header/sidepipes. We were allowed to get a low-rate loan from one or another bank, so about 25% of the class bought the $4-5000 Corvette; mostly new, but some used.
We studied hard and played hard; made fast, life long friends, including the Corvette. Sadly, we lost a few guys during weekend escapes, but the Vette's heavy steel frame and roll cage also saved a life or two. (RIP- Terry S. and John V.)
AF Academy CruiseFest IV Tour (http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96551)It'd sure be nice to be able to see this.
I flew C-141 Starlifters from CHS for over five years and married an AF Air Traffic Controller, from Altus AFB. (See: Love trumps Fraternization). Our oldest son is about to finish his military career as a Navy Lieutenant; a "Nuke" at the Washington Naval Shipyard. I had hundreds of the 101st Airborne and many U.S.A. jump trainees leave half way through the flight! I also got to fly that huge, four engine jet in the extremely exciting and demanding low level (100-300') radar-avoiding training ops at Red Flag. I still wonder what that guy in the old pickup, on that dusty road north of Vegas did when we zoomed, barely overhead him, at over 300 knots.
Rob, thanks for the forum. :w
