HELP! Oil Pressure 128!

When I got in my car to head home from work this morning the oil pressure gauge was pegged at the 80 psi mark. I cut the car off, recranked it, and watched the gauge go to full pressure, then drop back as it normally does to indicate it's operating, right? Then before dropping down to around 40 psi where it normally runs, it began to steadily increase back to full gauge and stayed there. I also checked the DIC and it said Oil Pressure 128 psi!

I killed it. Checked the oil dipstick - normal, looked under the car as best I can and nothing looks amiss. I drove it home with some trepidation but everything ran and sounded fine. Oil pres ran in the 126-128 range.

BTW - I was partially run off the road on the way to work yesterday by another driver who came over into my lane when she didn't see me. That's another story, I only mention it here in case it is possible I may have damaged something UNDER the car. I DON"T think I did, because I was very conscious of sound and feeling and I don't think anything hit the bottom of the car.

Help! I'm concerned enough that I feel I better park my car until I can get it towed to my mechanic's on Monday.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I'd appreciate the input.

JAG,

This seems to something that is occurring at a frequent pace lately.
Oil Pressure @ 129 PSI Faulty Sending unit???
Your sensor will need to be replaced, which requires the intake manifold to be pulled to get to it.
Sorry to hear you're the latest owner to have this happen.

To be sure it is the Oil Pressure sensor, turn the car on to the ignition position without starting the engine. If the gauge creeps up, it is the sender.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it! I tried to respond this morning after I got home from work but I fell asleep at the computer!

I did as Markham suggested and with the key turned on and engine off the needle still went to full gauge and stayed there and the DIC still registered 128 psi - so it looks like it is the sender.

I'll call Kevin in the morning to fill him in and get it scheduled this week!

BTW - Markham - man, what happened to the front of your baby (your avatar)? Please tell me it didn't have anything to do with oil pressure?!?

Finally got my Corvette in the shop yesterday and Chris changed the oil pressure sensor. It's scary watching someone take the top off the motor of your baby!

He also changed the tire pressure sensor that went out, did an oil and filter change and replaced the coolant and intake gaskets.

Oil pressure on the way home was 32 psi ! Beautiful!

Like a medical operation, it is hard to watch sometimes.

I'm glad you got that resolved.
Just be glad you have a mechanic who'll let you watch. That's much better than them whisking your car away while you sit in the waiting room.

I'm really fortunate to have a great team taking care of my baby!

Kevin (manager) and Chris (MY exclusive mechanic thank you very much!) are great guys who know a lot about Corvettes and will sit down at the computer to search their resources if they run up against something unfamiliar. In fact, along with the CAC they're my best Corvette resources.

They're careful and conscientious in their work and they don't mind me observing and asking questions. I think this is a courtesy they extend to only a few because I never see anyone else in the shop with the mechanics.

And it helps that they know how I feel about my Corvette and would go off like a bottle rocket if they hurt her!
