Temperature Guage Problem

I have one last bug to work out on my car... a non-functioning temperature gauge. I am assuming this is probably related to the temperature sending unit. Can someone please point me to the location of the sensor? I have spent what seems like hours in the engine compartment and cannot locate it.

On the '90 it should be near #6 cylinder on the passenger side, low on the block. It should have a single male terminal connector sticking out. The wire that connects to it runs around from the wiring harness near the EST connector (green IIRC) and has a single female type terminal connector on the end near the sender. Most likely the connection has an air gap or the wire itself may have made contact with the exhaust manifold and burnt/broken. (this happened to mine) I may be incorrect on the type of connector on the wire end as mine was spliced at the burnt section when I bought the car.

Interesting. I just went and looked and mine has a pipe plug in that location. It is actually in the lower part of the head and not in the block, basically inline with the spark plugs. If you were to swap the heads (left to right) my sensor is in the same location. I wonder if this was a change or due to options, there is another post about removing the pipe plug on a '89. I know with the terminal removed from mine I don't get a temp reading in the dash.

One of them have to be the temp switch for the cooling fan right? I have a sensor in both sides, I believe my sensor readout is on the passenger side. However the temp switch for the cooling fan is on the driver side. Does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense. The '90 and '91 cars are SD so that may have something to do with it. Although scotty1 said his is on the other side. My main fan is controlled by the ECM the Aux fan is also (temp set in the chip), but there is an override somewhere. Turning on the AC will start the aux fan, this may be controlled by the ECM also ... not sure.

Well, that was easy... the sensor was located under the #6 cylinder and it was unplugged. After the quick fix I'm back up and working. Thank you all for your help.
