Darned "Check Engine" light

The check engine light stays on since the motor was changed and the computer was unplugged from the distributor(new non computer distributor installed) and a non computer carb was installed. Since the computer is no longer doing anything, if I killed the power to the computer would the check engine light go out? What other gremlins would present themselves if I killed the computer?
That check engine light has go to GO!!, but I dont want to go into the dash .

Just take the bulb out of the sockett in the gague cluster, easy...

Hey Mike,
My '81 has a Jasper rebuild of a 79 L82 in it (previous owner), no idea if the computer is still around or not. What am I looking for - wires to the carb and distributor? Also, where would the computer be hiding? Thanks.

Computer is right behind the drivers seat in the battery compartment

Craig, the computer is located in the jack compartment behind the passenger seat. Remove the plastic tray to expose the jack and you will see the puter mounted to the side wall.
The distributor has a 3rd set of wires to it, (I think) . Mine are simply unplugged to the new vacuum dist.
The carb has a double wire set that plugs in to the carb -on top and the corner closest to the passenger headlamp. Again, mine is simply unplugged and taped off since I am running an 80 model carb. Hope this helps.

cheeseral- how is this done? do I have to remove the cluster or can one do it from behind without gauge cluster removal?

Well, if you take off the drivers side carpeted panel you might be able to reach up behind the gage cluster and get the socket out, they just twist out and back in. Getting the cluster out is easy tho, six screws, the 4 on the outside of the cluster and the 2 underneath attaching the cluster to the shift console. Just be careful with the dash where the top of the cluster comes out so you don't rip the vinyl.

If this is an auto trans car, the ECM is still necessary to operate the TCC relay. It also operates the fan.

I assume you mean the torque converter when you say TCC ?
My torque converter electrical hookup is unplugged, so that wouldn't matter. Looks like the only thing the puter is doing is running the fan? I assume you mean the radiator fan? thanks for the insight.
