Default Rim Width Size vs Tire size

Anyone know of a site that allows one to see what tire sizes match rim width sizes. I want to put wires on my 66 and the rims are 5 1/2 wide. What is the best (largest) size that fits that rim width.

Check in the Tool box in the Learning Center. There are a few tire selector sites in the Misc Tools section. All tire manufacturers list the recommeded rim with range for a particular size tire in their spec sheets. I check in there all the time for things like tread width, section width, diameter and rim with range.

The general rule of thumb is that the rim width and tread width should be within 1.5" of eachother. ie a 6" rim can have a treadwidth tire of no more than 7.5" or less than 4.5"

Hope this helps.

It varies slightly by tire manufacturer, but most stick pretty close to the TRA (Tire and Rim Association) technical guidelines. B.F. Goodrich and Firestone spec charts generally show 205/70, 215/70, 205/65, 215/65, and 205/75 as the widest 15" tires that are recommended for fitment on a 5.5" rim.

You can round about check it on Tire Rack. http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp

Go to Products/Tires and enter a tire size you think you would like to use. Hit "Go"' and "Proceed to results" on the next page. Pick the tire you want and hit "Specs". The table will show you the tire's "Measuring rim width" (design rim width) and the "Rim width range" and all kinds of other tire info.
