What's your favorite Corvette Indianapolis Pace Car?

6-shooter,

I went with the 78' Pace Car because I've always liked that silver over black paint scheme. It just went perfect with the lines of the shark body. Those cars looked outstanding with or without the Indy decals.

. . . but the 2004 gets my vote, it's pretty hard to beat a Red, White & Blue Corvette! :upthumbs

Very nice shots, I’m torn between the three C5 Pace Cars. The ’98’s yellow wheels always make me think it’s a giant Matchbox car (I mean that in a good way).

I vote for the ’98, if you’re going to be in front of the pack, might as well scream that you’re there.

I voted '78- and hey I have one in my garage. I would have easily changed that- had the 2005 been yellow instead of red. I don't discount the '86 either- I like that one too.

I see one of these in some future Indy 500 race (C6 Z06 yellow with decals and painted stripes and flags). I also see one of those in my garage also.

I sure hope I see some mo money in that future as well??!!

I feel forced to go with the '78.

'Cause, I can't decide which I like better -

The 50th anniversary '03, with the solid paint job.

The tasteful '04 Red White & Blue.

Or the agressive paint job on the nose of the '05. (Side view please? 3/4 front from driver's side? How about a nice, high, rear view?)

I voted 78. The black and silver with those spoilers on looks awesome.

Dwayne,

Am I mistaken or wasn't there a 2004 Pacecar replica at the museum during Cruisefest? Unless I dreamed it, it seems as though someone bought all the badging and graphics, and made his own. As I recall, it was even declared by someone "official" to be an exact replica.

That would be pretty neat to own a one of a kind like that!
And it was a beauty too.

I have to vote for the 86 for reasons that are obvious, and for some reasons that are not.

First bieng that the 86 was the first car ever to pace the race in stock form. No modifications where made to the engine, suspension, or drivetrain.

Also the 86 really was the road to bigger and better things. The late 70's were pretty hard on the corvette, and by the mid 80's things were back where they belonged including performance, handling, braking, and looks. I do like them all though, and would take any one of them. I just looked beyond there visual cues.

I had to vote for the 78. The 78 Pace Car was the first Vette I owned.

I read an article in one of my Corvette mags about a guy who got GM to sign off on an "Official Replica" of the 2004 model since the 3 that were made were all spoken for at the end of the month. It may have been that car that was sitting in the museum.

I voted for the '78 for 2 reasons.

When I was 11 years old I rode my bike down to the local chevy dealer to look at his Pace Car. That is when Corvette Fever started with me! I would ride down at least once a week just to look at it and drool. Evidently, the sales people though I would do something bad to it since they used to watch me like a hawk while I was there. It was eventually sold but I never forgot. It didn't hurt that I grew up about 20 miles from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway either!

I always told myself that I would own a '78 Pace Car someday. The someday came when I was 26 living in Florida. I finally bought one. It was my first Vette. I still own it but it is a basket case. However, it is an L-82. Its only redeeming feature right now. It still starts right up once the battery is charged too.

Randy,

Interesting read... thanks for sharing it!

P.S. I like the '78 pacecar too. In fact I have 2 of the 1:18 models that draw so much attention in eBay auctions - probably the closest I'll ever get to owning one!

I can't believe it took 25 years for a Corvette to pace the Indy 500.

I'm in the minority, but I voted for the '95 Pace Car. I love that waving flag running along the sides. In fact, it looks pretty good on non-Indy Pace Cars, too.

I went with the 98... :D I like driving our 98 PC convertible a lot more than I liked driving our 78 PC. Plus it gets a lot more attention than any of our other vettes put together. :L BTW, I sold my 92 last week, but it didn't go far, just next door, so I have visiting rights. :w

I have always liked the 78, the color combo was killer. I remember I was in college at the time they came out, and I had my 64 coupe at the time, and was at the local Chevy dealer looking at the one they had, when a transport pulled up with 6 others on it. The driver told me he was working for a "rich oilman" who was buying every one he could lay his hands on. Loaded that one up to. If I remember correctly the "oil man" was paying about $10,000 above the list.

I went with 2003. I love that they made the 50th anaversary car in my favorite color and the PC graqphics are really cool. In fact the 2003 PC vert is my favorite C5.
