(I don't think this is too far off topic and I hope it sticks.)
Despite some nasty individuals in our society, the basic goodness in peoples' hearts never ceases to amaze me. A local boy of six years has been in and out of hospital for months owing to a bout with leukemia. He needs a bone marrow transplant. Recently a suitable donor has been located through our national bone marrow registry.
The parents are middle class and at the stages in their careers where a mortgage and child-rearing costs take a big bite out of the paycheques. While Canada has a pretty fair basic/universal health care system, it does not cover all. The child must be moved to a specialized facility in another city for a period of three months. The parents will be uprooted for that time as well. You can imagine the incremental costs associated with that.
I have worked with the local Police force in the past on "Take it to the Track" days designed to encourage young car enthusiasts to do their racing there and not in the streets at 3:00am. I was informed last week by the Police that the entire street (18 homes) where the boy lives would be shut down today for a fund-raising event. (it was mentioned on TV last Friday.) And asked would I drop by with a couple of Corvettes to spark some crowd interest. I did so.
What an event! There was a band, many games for the kids, hotdogs, garage sales, pizza, cotton candy, and much more. Everything was donated by local residents and businesses. All proceeds go to the transplant fund. Hundreds of people showed up.
Corvetting can take many twists and turns!
That's the mascot of the NHL's Ottawa Senators. And many kids had their pics taken on the Harley. It took me about 15 minutes to get the clear pics as the crowds were pretty thick.
