Ready for a quieter set of side exhausts for my 427-400

Now that I'm finally back on the road again,My side exhausts look great but I really need to find something more civilized.Would like something that sounds strong but not like open headers.Also should I go w/stainless and who would you purchase them from and about what do they cost. thanks Jim

I know sound levels being to high or to low end up being a persons personal opions.That being said,I have a 66 427/425 with stock exchaust manifolds,My side exchaust was new in 2000 and ufortunatly dont have a lot of milage on them.I purchased them from Paragon reproductions,I find mine to be OK.they have a nice rumble to them.I am hoping I can emulate the sould of my 66 on my 62.I have a C5 with a B&B cat back exchaust and at idel ots louder then the 66.

I am not sure if they have a soulution for you but in all the years I have ran into them in our hotel they were real nice people and I can only assume the run there buisness the same way.

If you are looking for a sound that's civilized, you will have to look to someone other then " Allen's ". They have an excellent side exhaust system, but the noise level on their mufflers is a tad higher then most are ready to accept. That's what I have on my car, so if you want to have a little idea of what you can expect in the sound department ( idle only, imagine when you step on it ) just click on the following link.

You're original GM mufflers, might have outlived there usefulness, but read my lips, if you want something mellow and acceptable, you will need to find another set of originals, because I have used just about every repro available, and they are ALL loud.

I just bought new exhaust when I re-did the 67. I had the stock...semi worn out sides. When I installed the new motor the pressure really blew the exhaust out and I had to replace it. I talked to Allen's, Sweet Thunder and Stainless works. I decided to go with Stainless works(non-stainless) sides because they told me that they would probably be more civilized. Not true, these are the loudest sides I have ever heard. I think they are louder because I did opt for the largest inner diameters that they had. I can feel the diference in the power but I would prefer a little quiter sound. It really sounds like straight pipes at certain times. At the idle the cam sounds really mean and really loud. When WOT is applied the exhaust actually quites down some. So the majority of the time it is too loud for me. If your motor is close to stock I would go back with the stock inner diameter and keep things a little quite. Stainless will have a different sound and may have a ringing affect.
