Default Remote keyless entry fob programming

Hey everyone,

Just got a new '96 LT4 roadster, and didn't get any fobs for it - and no owner's manual either. I have a fob for my long-lost '98, which has both active and passive modes thru a switch. I was wondering how to program the fobs on a '96, and I thought I'd see if the '98 fob would work with it. Does anyone have the procedure for fob programming?

I could give you the programming procedure but it won't do you any good. '98 fob won't work with a '96.

Oh okay. I didn't know it had already been attempted. I'll try checking eBay for a '96 fob.

Since you don't have any fobs to start with, that may be a little tricky. You have to match the FCC and Part numbers on the back to the ones that were original to the car. Maybe someone here knows how to figure that out without having a fob to go by.

Look for FCC ID ABO0202T. I believe all 93-96 are the same.

No fair, you C4 guys have all the luck. When I went looking for one for my 98 there were three and, of course, mine was the rarest.

Tell you what though, that passive keyless entry can be a real pain, Like if you're working anywhere near the car and you have that FOB in your pocket, those doors are constantly opening and relocking. I have disabled for just that reason and I don't miss it a bit.

Isn't that what the holding down the "Door" button for 5 seconds is for? Why kill PKE because "those doors are constantly opening and relocking" when all you have to do is temporarily turn it off when working on the car (or leave the fob out of range).

I don't have any experience trying a 98 fob on a 96, but I do know you can order a new 96 fob thru a dealer. They broke one of mine last year and it cost them about $130 to replace it. Worth having in my opinion, and I love the fact that it is so easy to temporarily disarm while washing or working on the car as someone else metioned. The owners manual is another must IMO and worth the effort to replace. Can never have too many references, because they don't always agree.

Good luck. And congrats on getting an LT4 - they are a blast.

Agree w/ kopbet,

If I'm working on it, racing, washing whatever, just hold the button down til it cycles the locks - pke off. When you're done & put it away hold the button til it cycles again pke on. Piece of cake & you then have the pke protecting your beautiful Vette.

I turned mine off and took it off the keychain. it is great when the car is a daily driver, but a real PITA otherwise. I usually have the top off anyway, so who needs locks

Found the owner's manual in the jack area, tried programming the '98 fob to the '96 for s&g's but of course it didn't work. Good thing there's eBay. Thanks for the 5-second trick, kopbet! I've been wondering about that.
