Default Air Filter Tightening

I wanted to verify that in fact the previous owner had put in a K&N, so for the first time today I pulled the air filter. Yes, its a K&N, and had the sticker on the cover. The filter looked pretty good, and seemed properly oiled (i.e. it had oil!).

Putting it back was more difficult that I thought. I eventually unclamped the hose at the side the took the entire plenum out. I then assembled the filter and cover into the plenum and locked it together with the center screw. Put the whole assembly back in, and screwed in the two side screws and reattached the hose.

But I am a little concerned that it looks like the gasket in the plenum that mates with the cover seemed more compressed at the top end (where the three screws are) as opposed to the bottom where the tabs are. I am sure the tabs from the plenum at the bottom went through the slots in the cover.

I guess I should have looked better before I took it apart, but I didn't. Is that the way its supposed to be?

Thanks, Bob

Bob,

I know what you mean...
I had the same difficulties w/ mine (before I switched to the SLP) the first time I took it apart. Once you reassemble it once though you figure out a method and it's much easier after that.

From what I hear, the K&N is a snug fit in the stock air-box especially w/o the cut lid so that may explain what you are describing.

Sounds to me like you have it right though.

Sorry, that's all I got...

Jeff

You're right. I took it all apart a second time to check, and it was very easy! A friend and I looked at what I was referring to (the screw side seeming tighter against the rubber than the tab side) but it looked OK so we put it back in.

The problem is that the directions in the owner's manual are really minimal. Oh well...

Thanks, Bob
