Default Looking for 4speed tranny

Have I gone mad? If I was to find all the necessary parts to convert my auto tranny to a 4 speed, and the price was right, then I would "have to" do it.
Man, I hope my bride isn't reading this.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, where to look, how much to spend. etc? Just planning my Fall '05 project ahead of time.
ANY and all help would be appreciated.

Here are a couple of Ebay sites that are specific to 1981's. I've seen tranny's and everything needed to convert for sale at one time or another

Ebay 1981 Corvette

and

Ebay 81 Corvette

Default Nice

81Corvette- thats a really nice set-up they have, but I wasn't looking to spend $4500 for the changeover. Was thinking more in line of $2000 + or -.
If I can't find what I want for that price, I may consider these guys, they do look to have their act together on their product, just a bit too expensive for now.
Thanks for the info, and I have saved their website for future reference.

Default 4 speed conversion

I "currently" in process of doing this as you described. "Currently" means: I started about 3 months ago, bought all the necessary parts, got the pedals in, new speedo, ....and had to stop to handle other responsibilities. Just got started back today...and have a problem w/getting the center cluster gauges working correctly.
You can get the job done for under $2000. ContemporayCorvettes.com (Pennslyvania), justcorvettes.com (missouri), vetteconnect.com, and cranescorvette.com (california) are all junk, errr salvage yards that will sell you a package deal. Of course, I'm assuming you're doing this yourself or at least part of the job. goood luck, jim

Default great

like2drive, thanks for all the info, i will visit their sites today.

Recently there was a complete 4 speed system on ebay. I was high bidder but didnt meet the reserve set at $1000. Tried talking them into a resonable offer but no luck. Heck, the freight alone was $300 from California to south Louisiana. Guess it's all in how bad you want it, eh?

If I can not find what I want at a resonable price, then we'll look for a junker and part it out saving the 4 speed for myself...........Hey, it's nice to dream.
thanks for the info.

about the only things that are Corvette specific are the clutch linkage and pedals and driveshaft. The major components ie: bell housing clutch trans can be from any Chevy 4 speed. http://www.fortesparts.com sells conversion kits for the Tremec I bought mine from them in 2000 and it is still running great.

FWIW a late 70's GM truck 4 speed is an OD 4th and will bolt in you have to fab the shift linkage and use a hurst shifter.

Default 4 speed muncie

I stumbled across a M21 yesterday at a transmission shop I was talking with about making the switch on mine. In time, he mentioned he had a Muncie, (I saw) and would like to sell it...he used it for drag-racing his Chevelle (claimed 5:13 ET but I don't believe it) He claims the Super T-10 is better, but he likes the 400 TH best. I didn't ask, but you may get it for less than $500.
(C & C Transmission, Dennis Kapusta, 704-489-0887) good luck, jim
( I decided not to use his garage...)
