| Flowmasters Mainly been thinking about going 40 series but flowmasters web site has sound bites http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster/sound.html?id=6mdMcPQB of the different mufflers they have and the 80 series on the C5 sounds pretty good to. What does everyone else think about all the different sounds? I know this is pretty much personal preference but would like to know the collective thoughts of everyone. ~Steve | |

I've got 40's. They are pretty loud. Sometimes I wish I would have gotten something not so loud, but most of the time, I love it.

Bob,
Let me ask you...If you replaced the headers and put true duals on it why did you go with new cats? I know the high flow cats are better performance wise but why not just eliminate them completely? You still have a smog pump on the car? Didnt look like it from the picures..Just curious because im leaning toward just eliminating them all together...there is no emissions here and by the time they put it in effect the car will be to old and will be grandfathered in..

Because of the smog nazis. The facility would not remove them, though I was able to convince them to put on true duals. As a practical matter, the Feds require the emission equipment to be original no matter what your state inspection policy might be so they should have only put on the 2-1-2 system.
The shop offered to make me test pipes so that I could remove them myself but since I paid for them I couldn't bring myself to pull the cats off and then pay additional money for test pipes to put in their place.
A lot of people are getting the off road kits from the various vendors and installing them themselves without the cats. I had heard the stories about the rattles, etc., associated with the pre-cut kits being not quite right for any particular car and decided to go with a custom job.
You can probably find a shop that will do it but these guys are the best in my area and that ultimately was more important to me than the question of cats.

Good question Bob. I assume you guys do not have a "Historic" registration that exempts you from GA emissions testing. In MD now that I have Historic tags I have no more state "sniffer" tests and I removed ALL the emissions equipment as well as the cats in my dual set up. Looks good Bob. Nice welded job.

Thanks Bob.
My car is no longer subject to inspection either. However, just because the State's don't require inspection doesn't mean you can legally remove the Federally mandated emission's equipment. As I understand the law the Feds mandate the equipment and leave it up to the State's to enforce. That's why you see such varied enforcement laws around the country.
So you can remove the equipment and get by the State but you are still in violation of the Federal law.

I don't think the Fed's are going to worry about our old Vette's. Be interesting to see how much different the sound is between yours and mine with basically the same set up sans cats. See you guys in June.

I think your probably right though I wouldn't rule out the locals pulling the cars over for revenue, similiar to the speed traps.
Car is running great. Oil pressure is good with the new oil pump and there have been no fluctuations. Need to get it out on the freeway and make sure the miss/noise has gone away.

Yeah the guys around here wont remove the cats either. Thats why Im just going to break out my trusty Sawz-All and cut them off and drive it down with open headers. They will put the true duals on then and they dont have to remove the cats cause it wont have any....Already talked to them and they said as long as they dont remove them they dont care.....my other plan was to pull off the license plates...put it on the trailor and tow it down and tell them its a circle track racer or something.....but anyway Im going with no cats and true duals....But was just curious why you decided to go with them..Washington State has emmisions testing only in certian counties. Its not state wide. iI belive Most cops look at our vettes and see that there sunday show and shine drivers and dont really mess with them about specifics anyway.
Washington requires a vehicle to be 30 years or older for "collector Vehicle" plates. Really sucks because they just changed it...it used to be 25 years. when you run collector plates up here you dont have to run a front license plate.

Steve..... I tried driving mine with open pipes and the noise was unbearable. I ended up going to the auto parts store and buying a flexible pipe and spanned the opening where the cat "fell off all by itself". hahaha It took me 30 seconds with a No. 18 blade to saw off the cat (did I just say that?) You will LOVE the new sound. The Delta 50's will fit perfectly but they are louder.
