steering rack

While my mechanic was checking my car for a battery drain, he noticed that the steering wheel was hard to turn, especially when just starting the car. He said eventually down the line, i would need a steering rack. how much does that cost to be fixed?? I have a 1984 corvette. Blueslady

Is there any noise coming from the unit? Is the power steering fluid leaking?

I replaced the rack in my '84 a couple of years ago. A non-factory, generic rack will cost ~$200, + an alignment after you're done. I would guess this job will charge 2 hours labor.

Hi,

I've read several of your recent posts about things going wrong with your '84 and your cost concerns. If I may...I would suggest that maybe you should be taking the car to someone who knows and/or specializes in Corvettes?? That way, you'd develop confidence in him and follow his advice. Just a thought!

Your vette has what's called "morning sickness". There is a thread posted here in the tech section by RJSROCKET in which he used Lucas power steering fluid additive and had good results. It's worth checking out.

Yup the Lucas Power steering fluid is fantastic, just make sure you add the full bottle.

Cured my morning sickness and leak. For the cost it's worth a try.

Listen to the previous two responses (Lucas treatment) and try that first. The power steering rack going bad is not an uncommon occurrence, so be prepared to replace it sometime, if not now.
