Default 1963 Tool Wells....need info....John Z you might know this...

I think I might have one of the Corvette's that have the tool wells under the seats. Now my question is rather simple, does the carpet cover these wells or is the carpet trimmed around the wells that are under the seats. Anybody have photographs of these wells? Did the later cars have flat floors under the seats? I take it the inside of the wells are painted the same black as the wells behind the seats...correct??? Before I put my seats back in I would like to trim the carpet and paint these wells if this is the correct thing to do, Need some information on these. Currently the carpet covers these wells... I understand tool kits were once in these wells, does anybody have one of these kits? What was in them? Where the kits in a box or wrapped in a cloth kit?

The recesses under the seats are described on p. 67 of Noland's book - about 6" deep until about #12,000, changed to 2" deep thereafter, and eliminated entirely for 1964. The photo on that page shows them exposed and painted like the jack/storage compartment, with the carpet cut out around them. Nobody seems to know why they're there, and there was never a tool kit of any kind released. I don't have a '63 JG, but there should be something about them there.

I think I remember reading that these deeper recesses were for power seat motors. Comments?
