{Track}Callaway Z06 w/ "Power Groups" runs a 10 sec. quarter mile last night, w/in >
This car drives and idles like a stock Corvette
There were more raucious sounding cars there, running low 12's - The Silver Callaway is simply AMAZING!!!!!!
Last night at Englishtown Raceway Park, the Callaway Cars Z06 test car, silver 2003 model, cracked into the 10’s in the quarter mile! Featuring the various “Power Groups” to enhance the already stellar Z06 performance, this car rocketed down the track to a blistering 10.91 @ 126.85 mph resulting in not only huge grins from Chief Engineer Mike Zoner, but also a note on the time slip asking that the car “run 12’s or be done”.
This is the same silver car currently featured in Corvette Enthusiast Magazine’s November issue however in the article, only Power Groups I, II, and III were installed – now the car features Power Group IV, a 6.8 Liter engine based upon the C5R aluminum block.
This cars performance has been evaluated and much of what has been learned will be featured in the next project, the Callaway CCC6, a joint venture between Carlisle Productions and Callaway Cars making the car into the “Carlisle Callaway Corvette”

 That's awesome!!!!! It's crazy what they can make a car do yet still retain the characteristics of a stock 'Vette. Any word on what the H.P. and Torque numbers are????

Reuben, That car made appx. 460 rwhp - It will pass the "sniffer" emissions test I am sure & run on 93 octane gasoline.

Mic, Not sure I follow you on that one 
There were other cars there "claiming" to have 500 - 570hp (Z06's) from various "tuners" - none of them were even close to the upper - mid 11's
...it was about 68 deg. w/ 85% rel. humidity last night, FWIW

I picked up a copy of that article today, Congrats to the Author!!!!!!!!!
Given that the car has all the creature comforts and is not a hacked "dragster" like other cars running in the 10's, to me that's impressive.
Go Callaway!

That 10.91 is fast but like Mic said for a 6.8L engine in a car as light as a Z thats not very impressive especially when you add in the cost of Callaway mods. I can buy an 87 GN and get it to run 10's all day long and carry 4 guys to the golf course all the while running like stock. If you go even money I bet I could get the handling of the Buick to be Vette like.

Please do not compare a GN to a Corvette - there just is none
That said, Having owned a GN, I could NOT get the car to run as strong as the Z06 - None of my friends were as fast, not even the Turbo TA guy's - sorry... stuck in the 11's
The GN was a brick and couldn't handle for stink but, why are we even bringing up that car
On "THE z06 web-site", there are only three other cars listed with faster timeslips, period. Timeslips_Link:
Of those three cars, I seriously doubt any have the mild mannered characteristics that the Callaway Z06 shows - it is a car that can be driven EVERY day and as Luigi said - not a hacked up race car.
I am not saying a faster car isn't out there - but I am certain that something was compromised in the process of constructing it - Drivability, emissions compliancy, noise levels, etc.
I make no secrets about the fact I believe Callaway Cars engineers a solution not only for great value in performance - but that continues on, by retaining that value long after the dust has settled...

I do own a GN (actually GNX#254), so I know what you are talking about.
I also own a Callaway Twin Turbo and frequently visit the folks at Callaway. I have seen the car.
Like 89x2 said, you can't compare the two. They are two seperate beasts.
For me, its not about the money, its about doing it in style. I have seen enough cars at the track, particularly GN's (like Cal Hartline's). But NONE have the ability to do those numbers with such good looks. That is something that Callaway is well known for.

For the nay sayers.....have you ever heard one of those "streetable" 500rwhp head cam jobs? Those cams are so radical, I wouldn't try to drive the car on the street. I don't know much about this latest Callaway offering, but my guess is that the car idles smooth and could be driven every day without a hiccup.
Anyone can build a race car....build one that you can drive everyday, have it not break down, pass emissions....then youve done something.

Chris, is that the car you had at Chik-Filet that Friday? If so, it did sound pretty normal when you fired it up. It was a bit deeper sounding than a regular Z06, but was not loud and offensive.
Who'd think someone would say a 10.9 1/4 mile time wasn't impressive, what a great time to be alive!  I assume it was on street radials, not DOT slicks or anything? It looks like that time slip has the car at a 1.64 60' time? How many passes did the car make that night, and how many total since it's had the Powergroup IV added?
How much did those additions cost, and how much power does it claim to make?

I wholeheartedly agree. That's what tends to impress me about cars from Lingenfelter and Callaway, and even the stock Corvette from GM. They may cost a bit more for a given power-level, but they perform well at that level. No one-trick ponies.

I was just making a point. I know the 2 cars are different vehicles. But for 2 guys that own/owned GN's you obviously didn't read alot about them. I know for fact that there were guys in the GSCA who's daily driver GN's were running mid 10's fully streetable with working accesories including AC. If you couldn't get that car to run mid 10's then you were doing something wrong no offense meant. I belonged to that glub for a long time and still have all my back issues of the GSXtra. You are correct that GN's handle like bricks stock but the can be upgraded to provide .9+g of grip.
Having made that statement and being a Corvette owner I love both vehicles but I was just echoing Mics statement that 10.91 for a Callaway Z really isn't impressive when you take into account the cost of the car.

Aurora, Same car - it does sound nearly stock, has all the factory power accy's too.
The car made one other pass that night prior to the 10 sec. pass that led us to being "asked to not bring that car back" (for lack of a cage & belts for the times bracket it ran) however, it was about an 1/8th mile pass to verify the track conditions and launch
It had a couple other passes made however, the same same thing was encountered at other tracks - one run & done...
I don't have an exact figure for the power added, cost wise - about 26k for the engine, the other power group components such as the cat back exhaust and Honker intake would add marginally to the cost
I do believe for that level of performance, it is one heck of a bang for the buck - the car CAN be driven every day, a virtue that you & Surf echoed

Moe, believe me when I tell you I tried to get the car (I personally owned) into the 11's - without going to some major work, the car wold not have done it, I decided to sell the car - Dennis Kirban bought it, it was a nice car - but I moved on
I am also familiar with the GSCA (biting my tounge there  ) and remember the GN-TType message boards and the "recipie cars" long before the term became commonplace - I know for a fact, to get the performance (reliably) out of a GN or T-Type, you WILL spend close to the same - with the exception of the block purchase itself - GN Blocks are dirt cheap compared to a C5R block however, a set of heads for either is close in cost for each (even though the GN is lacking the two extra cyl's.
I do not intend for this thread to be a modified Z06 -vs- GN thread, there just would not be much of a point to that...
Bottom line, the Callaway Z06 ran a 10 second quarter mile at 126.85 mph, a fully streetable car w/ docile idle and the manners to be driven every day if you desired

Well, it looks like there is some room for improvement in the 60' times, so if you could get that down a bit, you could probably get the car in the 10.5's or less? Either way, that's not bad for $26k, and I'm sure that engine still has plenty more in it.

I think they could probally get a little faster if they were able to get more than one or two runs in at a time to get a more consistant feel of the car.
