Brake Dust Solution

ok, so I don't have any break dust issues on the C5 but some may. I do have a problem on my 2003 Ford Escape though. I found a product at the local dollar store that works great on it. It's called Mean Green. No, not Simple Green, Mean Green.

The stuff works fabulously on break dust. I just spray the wheels and take a fairly soft bristle brush and it the dust comes right off very easily. Then rinse with a hose. I also used it to clean the vinyl siding on our house with similar results.

I really don't have any problem getting brake dust off of my wheel but getting it off the calipers is another story!

True, I do use it on the Vette for the calipers and inside wheel wells now that you mention it. Great for that too.

Do you know if the product is an acid, or if it's alkaline? I suppose it wouldn't mention the pH on it?

Well, I'm no scientist but I've been using it for two years and no problems yet. But, I'll qualify that by saying that it's put on, brushed, and rinsed off.

Here are some portions of text on the bottle:

"Contains 2-butoxyethanol, alkaline builders and detergents. Biodegradeable cleaning agents - no acid or bleach."

"Not recommended for use on glass, aluminum, varnished or painted surfaces. Do not allow to dry. Do not mix with bleach or other chemicals"

Actually, I tracked down this PDF file which has a lot more technical information on it. The ph is listed at 12.0-12.5. Under "Conditions to avoid" it says "none known".

Thanks Calvins. That would be an alkaline product, which is usually safer than an acid product. I believe Eagle One A2Z is in the 12-12.5 pH range also.

All I know is that I've used it on the Ford wheels for two years, the Vette calipers and inner wells and motor for a year with no ill effects. (That I know of anyhow).

I'll take your comments to read that it's "ok" as long as ya don't let it stay on the surface.

Well, if you like it and don't have any problems, then that's the important thing. That PDF mentions it is meant to be used diluted for "normal" jobs, and full-strength for "difficult" jobs. I personally try to use the mildest stuff I can get away with. But I do use Eagle One A2Z on my wife's car because she really dusts the wheels up severely, and I just need something strong to tackle it. I still have to agitate them, though, before rinsing. You might try diluting it just to see how well it still works. Perhaps it will still be strong enough for you.

Steve...no demerits at all! Just thought there'd be more exposure to your recommendation if we put it in Care & Detailing...and it seems to have worked!
