Uh oh. You probably blew out the control module for the interior lights and timer (and probably your center-console hatch release won't work either). I did the same thing myself when fixing a broken wire in the passenger under-dash-panel light.
The module is located behind that panel under the passenger side of the dash, near the ECU (if the 84 has the ECU in the same place). It's probably taped up out of the way, so you'll need to twist around and look for it. It's a small black box about 2" square with a screw tab on one end and a connector on the opposite end.
These are made of Unobtanium. I've seen quotes as high as $50 at Carlisle (last year, though I did get one for $5 by salvaging it myself from a parts car). There are several people who fix them, though. I think Eagle85C4 is one of them. You can also pull it apart and look at the smoked capacitors and try and replace them yourself. I have my old one here and I plan to do that sometime as a spare.
If you need more help, or think that's not the problem, feel free to ask...
Oh, and if you do remove the passenger-side dash underpanel, be aware that there's not much slack for the light wiring. Pull down gently and disconnect it at the socket or you'll break the wire same as my car's previous owner did.
