Default Noise from rear...

Has anyone experianced a noice coming from the rear when backing up.. It only happens when the car starts cold.. If it's warmed up (like a quick run some where than back after a visit).. It doesn't do it.. It sounds like a grinding noise almost..

Any clues would be big help...

Default Noise from rear on cold start

Could be the antilock brakes 'setting' themselves. Try parking the car so the first cold movement is forward. It will probably groan then too, a few feet after starting to roll.
I've had several GM cars with antilock that groaned like that but the groan was in the front (where their antilock system is located). Some groan, some don't.
Your antilock system is behind the driver's seat.
Hope that's it.

Default antilock brakes

There's nothing to fix, it's just there.

I like to test the antilocks once in a while (I had a Blazer fail emissions testing -believe it or not - because the antilocks had set a code when a wheel sensor lead was cut and the code wasn't reset after the repair). About testing;

My mail box is beyond a gravel patch next to a country black top road. I drive one side of the car onto the gravel at about 15mph and stomp the brakes. They slip a little, the antilocks groan, the brake pedal vibrates like crazy and the car stops quickly.
If you haven't felt the antilocks kick in, you should try it so you're not surprised when you really need them. It's a very strange sensation but if they're needed, the driver should just keep mashing the brakes and let the antilocks bring the car to a safe stop.
And you can compare the groan to what you're hearing (hope it's the same).

Yeah, my '93 will do that..., sound like a big, heavy door opening down deep somewhere. Thought my rearend was going until I was told that's a natural thing. Got a friend with a '96 and his does it too. And it's always when backing up. But let me stress..., it is a groan, not a grind.
