Default If Hib is listening... what is the C6 sound proofing material?

Hib...

For those of us considering adding soundproofing to our C5s, can you tell us the description and source of the C6 soundproofing material mentioned in your article? As you know, there have been a lot of home brewed soundproofing retrofits, but I would prefer using the material selected by the GM acoustics guys. I understand the next generation EMTs and other improvements may be key to the overall solution, but the optimzed soundproofing would be probably be superior to Home Depot materials.

Regards...

Len

GM did not discuss the specifics of this new acoustic insulation material.

Sorry.

I would add that, regardless of the mass of it, just adding acoustic insulation to the rear of a C5 is not going to have near the impact of the acoustic work in the C6 because you don't have the 3rd gen. run-flat tire.

The first task must be to block as much of the sound as possible from getting to the interior, and that's done with the new tire.

The second task is to then, insulate the interior, to further reduce the noise.

Hib...

Thanks for the response.

The mass (or really density) isn't the point, this material is undoubedtly acoustic material, whereas some of the materials the DIYers are using are thermal insulation. GM knows specifically which frequencies need to be absorbed, hence this material is tuned to the application.

As to the tire, again, agreed, but if I do buy 3rd gen runflats, should they be made available for the C5, or should I buy another (presumably) quieter tire, the noise will be reduced at its source. The new tire doesn't block the noise, it prevents its creation.

As I alluded to in my original post, the solution is obviously a system of improvements, the more we learn about them, the more likely we are to be successful in implementing them. Just think how much additional cash GM could realize if they produced a factory endorsed sound kit for the C5!!!!

Thanks, maybe someone else will respond if they know the material.

Regards...
