Default If you're running a 502 - Part 2

Assuming manual transmission - after installing the Hooker sidemounts, I find that the pivot ball on the Scoggins-Dickey bracket will not work in the bottom hole. It hits the #5 exhaust pipe.

After moving the pivot ball to the upper hole, I find that I cannot install the cross-shaft as the pivot ball nut hits the 502 block and I don't have enough room between the ball and the frame bracket.

What was your solution? Start modifying the cross-shaft?

I can't answer your question, since I don't use those headers or the manual clutch setup, but I wonder if "MassVette" might have some experience with that. I'll send you his address via e-mail.

normally the pivot ball mounts on a "boss" on the block, it looks like your bracket moves the pivot away from the block shortening the distance between the two pivots. Mount the pivot balls to the bracket and and frame then measure the distance between them to see how much you need to "mod".
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback.

This is an example of what is driving me crazy on this project. Nothing seems to fit! Here we have a special bracket that cost me $CA120.00 and it does not work with Lakewood scattershields, nor does it work with sidemount headers.

How hard would it be for the manufacturer to note these things? I may still have purchased the item, but that would be after accepting that I would be required to put many additional hours into making it work.

It looks like I'm tight by a 1/4". Those of you who have examined the inner workings of the clutch cross-shaft will know the problems of removing a 1/4" in length.....an inside metal clip very near the frame-rail end; the pivot ball bottoming inside the shaft on the block end, for example.

Getting a 1/4" isn't going to be easy.

Well ...you came this far with the project....I'm sure there's got to be an answer to the Ball Stud de-bog-el.

What would p-o me off is whta you said...at least the mfg of the bracket could have considered since you are buying his bracket your motor isn't stock and problems like this could pop up.

I would call them and ***** a little and see what help they can offer. For $120.00 Ca... they should offer a solution.

Can you eliminate the nut for the ball stud by either welding the stud to the bracket, or somehow install threads in the bracket? Then tweak the bracket to get that 1/4".

Cut the shaft at the center (where it's just a raw piece of tubing) and take the extra length out there, then weld it back together; that's what I did to solve the same problem when I built my tube-frame Grand Sport.

Damn, John, you're good. Simple solution that totally escaped me.

That's why you're the man.

P.S. And thanks maxphunn. You were on the right track.

Man, that cross-shaft is thick walled, but it's cut.
