View Full Version : Do you Tip at Sonic(or other drive in restaurants)?
Just curious.
This has been a local topic in our newspaper's SOUND OFF section.
This goes for any cruise-in style of burger joint where the waitresses bring you your order on rollerskates.
Of course. I used to be such a bad tipper (didn't tip - couldn't afford to most of the time ;)) that now I usually over-tip. :o
It depends on the store policy. I even tipped a toll booth person once. :D

Sure. If these kids are willing to get out and work instead of hitting Mom/Dad up for cash, I think they deserve all the help they can get. And. . . in my MUCH younger days, I did the waitress thing, and the tips can really add up to a nice chunk of change. However, if the service is crappy. . .

I hope she was really cute......
:D
She does a great job....the girls that run the cars only make $2.50 an hour....they need the tips just to get to minimum wage.
This inspires them to work hard for you...if that dont do it , then they are the ones happy earning the lower wage...
My tip policy is that the thing is at ZERO when my service starts....they work up from there. Im a 20% tip if my service is good.

Congrats :upthumbs on raising a child with a strong work ethic! She'll do well all her life & you'll have peace of mind. My parents raised us that way (six kids total) and none of us dropped dead from it.
She does a great job....

I usually wait until after I get the bill at the end of the meal to decide how much tip to leave.
But anybody who can actually get my food to me on rollerskates deserves at least 15%! :)

Chas:wI'm with Chas ... BUT ... have a similar question: What tip (if any) is proper for a buffet or smorgasbord setting? Where customer chooses & picks up his own empty plate ... then ladles it himself ... where "wait staff" simply puts a bill on tabletop and refills beverage glass. This a true DIY except for drink refills. Two of my favorites are like this ... BBQ and a Chinese ... neither staff appear to be students. BTW ... for a time when I was in school, I waited tables at a full-service restaurant.

I like to use a similar policy unless they are bad......Then we tell them that they started with $10, but by the end of the meal the owe us $3!!!
I am a great tipper, but screw-up and I will let you know!
im gonna use this one someday, im sure...thanks reuben!;LOL ;LOL I like to use a similar policy unless they are bad......Then we tell them that they started with $10, but by the end of the meal the owe us $3!!!
At Sonic I'm a sort of keep-the-change-kind-of-guy. (Unless I pay for a burger and coke with a double sawbuck!) :D

You guys have restaurants like that?- Roller skating servers? -Don't have anything like that around here...but aren't you breaking one of the ten commandments of corvette ownership? " Thou shalt not have any food in thy vette"? :L
I can't imagine anyone thinking that a waitress working out in the weather on roller skates would be LESS deserving than one working inside in the temperature and humidity controlled building . I definately tip them for a job well done ! Cliff

I tend to overtip. I got a little tipsy one nigh (ok i got hammerd) and left this cute little barback $100. That was a little overboard.
Hi Rain -
Yes, I do.
I have worked jobs where I relied on that tip.
I tip my mailcarrier, the garbage guys etc. annually.
I tip for haircuts also, I hear that many do not tip the barber...
I also have heard that you should (?) leave a tip for the maid in hotels...I have not done this...
Do you have to tip the starter of the thread if you type in it? :D

mqqn Yes, you do tip the thread starter.. my PayPal account is open and waiting! LOL! ;LOL
do you tip the hairdresser/cutter if they own the shop or only if they are renting the chair/booth?
Do you chase down the Maid, or wait in the closet until she arrives? Surely they won't take the cash if ya leave it on the bed side table.. thats a whole OTHER thread of tipping!haha
Hiding in the bushes waiting on the mail man and the garbage truck.. I guess an envelope in the mailbox with POSTAL CARRIER on it would work. but how do ya tip the garbage guys?
I have at least 2 diff. mail carriers and I've never seen the garbage truck up close to know if its the same dudes each week..
Not knocking that you tip so well. I know its common practice. I've just never known 'the people in my neighborhood" that well. (Im 34 and just bougth my first house)
I tip the girls who do my acrylic fingernail. They are sweet and always ask me about my gigs and my daughter. (usually a buck or 2 on a 3$ nail)
You're supposed to leave the tip for the maid in an envelope marked "For the Maid." ;)
Thanks alot Ken - now I gotta leave more buckage in my wake...:L
Rain - I started out tipping my g-man when it was a friend of mine - I would leave a six-pack of his fav beer on one of the cans with a bow. They got a kick out of it.
I'll leave a card with $ in the mail box and taped to the lid of one of my cans - and a note that says "have a drink on us - merry xmas".
No biggie - probably makes me feel better than the recipients - but I got mine!

whew, just typed a nice reply and lost the damned thing! hahaha
late night!
Dont mind hijacking the thread.. its MINE and we are indeed making the world a better place by discussing this!
haha
Love the beer idea!
nice bonus - btw, whats the typical cash tip for postal and sanitation workers?
a 6 pack would be stolen if left on top of a garbage can in my area.
way way too many skilled and semi skilled workers come thru here. about 6 homes still being built around my.. so thats the daily traffic.
But the envelope and bow in the mailbox would work fine.
Gotta be COLD beer...
as long as its not GENERIC BEER!! ;LOL

90 miles to FREEDOM!
$5 bottles of rum, 27$ and you get your pick from any girl in the house!
What'a Country!
Yes, Like older Taylors. Not crazy about the new ones.
Have a late 90s 714ce that doesn't get much time on stage but does go to the studio.
Buddy of mine in Monroe, LA has several.. espeically an OLD 900 series jumbo that I covet! Hand built by Bob Taylor himself. Great sounding box!
Hi Rain -
I leave $10 for the mail carrier and $5 apiece for the trash guys - there are usually three of them - if there are only two then they can fight it out for themselves.
It is a very small gesture - but one that is appreciated - I have even had the guys bring my cans up to the garage door on very windy days -
I recently have been playing with a buddy that swears by Taylors - he has 7 of them - I played a 414ce - ovankol wood - it was one of the brightest sounding axes I have ever heard - I still like my George Washburn, but I have been considering selling my '79 Iceman and investing in a Taylor.

Iceman?
Don't see those very often.
Sounds like that fella has quite the collection of Taylors! haha
Like I said, Im a fan of the older models. Seems the newer ones are having pickup and electronics problems. Doesn't sound good for Taylor.
My 98' 714ce (cedar top/rosewood back and sides) listed for $3400 new.
I played the fool out of it up until I went with all graphite guitars a few years ago.
Make ya a killer deal on it if you have not already picked out a NEW one already.
Mine of course has pick wear from use(its a western red cedar top: sounds like 40 year old Spruce, but is softer and hence shows wear faster) I call it "Character"! haha
Just don't trust older guitars that still look new.. that means the owner might not have liked it and never played it. (to me)
yack at ya later!
Rain(btw, I will let it go for a third of list with the "luggage" style hard shell case)

Glad to see that no one here is as bad as Steve Buscemi ... :LKen,
I actually have that entire little conversation in MP3 format. I think it's damn hilarious and it DOES make you think! "Society says tip these people here, but not these people over here..."
I guess I'll be the dissenting opinion here and say that when I do tip, I tip well, IF it's deserved. But as far as tipping every single person that performs a service for you...that's absurd. They are doing the job that they are paid to do. If they don't make enough money or enjoy the job enough, then change careers. If you have to survive off tips alone, then I suggest you lower your standard of living.
I don't get tips at my job and I help people all day long.
Doctor's don't get tipped. They certainly help you when you need it.
When is the last time you tipped a librarian? (Ok, when's the last time you actually saw one...but nonetheless....)
How about that cat that sits in the bathroom and hands me a papertowel from the stack sitting right next to him. ...I'm gonna give you money just because you handed me a papertowel before I could grab it myself? Seems more like I'm paying you for a service I didn't ask for and one that I'm completely capable of doing myself, thank you very much! Anyways, my hands are clean because I just washed 'em! Don't know where your hands have been, buddy...
And I know that whenever I enter a door before someone else, regardless where I'm at, I hold the door for 'em, even if there's a lot of them. I don't get tipped for that! Nor would I want one. A courtesy is one thing, which is what I am providing. Expecting a tip for it, well, that's no longer a courtesy- that's a service.
BUT...as I said, I am a good tipper. And I'll leave a tip commensurate with the establishment. I typically leave a 50% tip on my tabs at an exceptionally nice bar that I frequent, however I'm not going to leave that same percentage at a local towny bar that serves me cheap liquour in plastic cups.
Oh yeah, the other thing about tipping every service worker and their brother...now you've set a precedent for yourself. That's a position I don't like to put myself in.
Just giving a differing opinion for no other reason than just because.

Hi Rain -
That is almost like mine - same basic color - fixed neck, twin flying-fingers humbuckers - locking tuners - hardshell...
Plays like a gibson IMO - with an SG neck - not the paul style wide fingerboard.
It does fret out close to the machine head if you use slinkys.
thanks for the reply buddy -

every Taylor i have played has beaten every Martin i have played in string action and tone. i'm sure there are great Martins out there but i never saw one to beat a Taylor. Right now i play a Ibanez100 ce, yeah a cheap axe but with Elixer(polyweb) strings and the great set-up i got from Sam Ash i truly love it. i also play a 1970's Ibanez mahogany archtop, dimarzio humbuckers(soon to be EMG's). my partner just got his Zakk Wylde Gibson. We have fun.
Right on! Fun is what its about. If ya can also make a living at it, then thats all the better in my book!
I too have never played a Taylor I did not like. Everything from the Baby Taylor up to the 900 series and presentation boxes.
Martins hit me differently. The new Martins I've played did not strike me as globally. D-28s are still my favorites though I have never owned one. Martin necks do not feel good to me.
Latest group of Martins I wanted to carry home with me??
October of last year I hit Gruhn's Guitar shop in Nashville and played a half dozen pre war (before 1945 aprox.) D28s. None of em had original tuners or pick guards. Most had repaired top or side cracks and re set necks.. But these guitars sounded so SWEET!
Naturally I was in the vette and had no room for another guitar on that trip.(plus I didnt have 15thousand dollars for each guitar either. LOL!
Glad to hear we have some active pickers on the CAC!
