My Corvette(s):
Default new key

Hi!
I have lost my reserve ignition key and I've got to make another one.
How can I find out the code of the key?

I take it that you have one of those high security keys with the electronic chip embedded in it? If so you are best to go to a dealer to get a new one!

Trying to get one of them done right though one of those kwick cut key copiers you see in Home Depot or Lowes leads to problems because they don't have the proper facilities to embed the proper code into the electronic chip. A real lock- smith might be able to do it, but don't count on it.

I don't know what you have available in your country as far as lock smiths go, but if you have a good one check with him. He may have the VATS key blanks and identify which one you have. There are 15 different values. If you have an ohm meter measure the resistance of the pellet in the key, side to side. Use this chart below to identify which value you have. Find the closest value in the right column. You can also order from any number of places on the web like Eckler's etc. About $15US. Then take the key blank someplace and have it cut to match your original.

1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1,130
6 1,470
7 1,870
8 2,370
9 3,010
10 3,740
11 4,750
12 6,040
13 7,500
14 9,530
15 11,800

Values are in ohms

Isn't it funny how the previous owners always seem to loose the keys and the remote fobs. I went to the dealer for a new key when I first purchased the car, the raked me through the coals for $100 for a key! Thiefs!

It is amazing. Happened to me also, but luckily it only cost me $26 for new key pair. FOB was nearly $100.
