To change waterpump or not???

I have a -93 Coupe LT1 with 70,000 miles on it.

I have no problem with the waterpump or Optispark (as of yet).
I am thinking of changing the waterpump as a precausion. I have never replaced a waterpump on a Corvette but on many other cars. I am assuming it is possible to drain the coolant out of the engine before i pull the pump (otherwise this is not a great idea..)? I am going to LA in a couple of weeks and should be able to pick up the parts i need for a lot less than it costs back home (in Sweden).

What do you think, change the pump before it breaks or wait until it breaks and replace the opti at the same time??

If I were in your situation, and planned to keep the car for a few years I would probably buy an Opti and water pump. If the savings on parts here is substantial compared to Sweden it sounds like a good move. If you didn't use the parts you could sell them at home and make your money back.

On my car I would not replace a water pump that is not leaking (unless the Opti was being replaced as well). I know the danger of soaking the Opti when it goes but it may not leak for years. If you feel that you would like to replace the Opti as part of an ignition tune-up, this may be a good time to install a new water pump too.

In my book, they would usually be replaced at the same time because of their proximity and history.

Also if I were in your situation...I would also install a "NEW" waterpump...not a rebuilt.
