Default '66 cigarette lighter restore....

Is it possible to replace just the element?.......worth the trouble?

It's possible - check the NCRS DRIVELINE, as they are always for sale - that's where I found an NOS for my 1963 Z06 restoration - if you're not an NCRS member, let me know and I could be persuaded to look for you! (VBG)

Yup, the heating element unscrews from the knob shaft - the one you want (for judging) is stamped "63 CASCO 12V" on the outside of the sliding shroud; they pop up on eBay occasionally.
