Torquing the pulley on the alternator

How do you torque the pulley on the alternator? Is there a special tool…I know you can put a large allen-wrench in the center to hold the shaft…but what do you use to torque that bad boy…once you get the allen-wrench on you can’t exactly fit a socket on it too. I sure don't want that sucka coming off and flying through my hood.

Usually I use my 1/2 inpact wrench (air) that will do it. There doesn't seem to be a way to lock the stator and use a regular torq wrench

Like Ernie, I just tighten it securely Jon - no torque wrench. ;shrug

Hey jonM!

I can't tell you how but if you ever find out how to stop the shaft from spinning PLEASE TELL ME !!

(When I installed the underdrive pulley kit, I broke the little fan trying to stop it inserting a screwdriver in there!!! :cry) I thought it was metal ;shrug

Hey Jorge, you should have seen my fan after I switched pulleys when I changed alternators. I neglected to use the spacer that goes behind the fan and caused it to be pulled in too close to the body of the alternator. It made the so much racket when I fired it up that I didn't know what it was! I ended up removing something like seven of the eleven blades that were on the fan. Stupid!! :hb

Thanks Ken, That happened about 10 months ago and I did not tell anybody, you guys are the first to know!! (Did I just told 10,676 guys how stupid I am ???) :confused

I use an allen wrench and a big "metric" adjustable :L

You need one of these, correct size of course......put the allen wrench in a big vise, put the alternator on it and torque the nut........

Thanks everyone for the info...I got the damn thing installed only to find out the new alt is NG...aaaaaaaaaa :mad ..........oh well. :eyerole ...I am starting to wonder about american pride in the workplace...Maybe outsourcing isn't such a bad idea if quility is better. :(

I know what you mean. I lost mine in BG two years ago 400 miles later the rear bearing froze on I80 pieces all over out the fender up and cracked the hood! took 3 to get a good one!

i think theres a tool for that my friend borrowed it from auto zone were he bought his alt

Two lessons here, Tighen the nut with an impact wrench, or make sure it is very tight!!!! And two, Buy a quality reman. alt. or a NEW one. To much B.S. with a CHEAP REMAN. Just my .02 worth.:(
