View Full Version : Driving it MORE because of gas price
Compared to 10 mpg in the '77 and '98 Ford truck guzzlers the Vette is the emergency economy car with 19 average mpg. After 30 years it seems like we could have figured something out. I remember the gas lines in '73.
The 'war on terror' has a price.. about $2 a gallon. Sorry about the political slant but dayamm we need to lose this vulnerable position. It makes us be friendly with folks that don't see it our way.
I agree with what you're saying. With that said, If you can own a vette as a play toy, you can afford gas....I'll keep putting premium in the vette, even when its $5.00 /gallon.

Agreed.
i know what you mean. My vette gets really good gas mileage with the M6. Prices have been around 2 bucks. When im going above 40 mph im in 5th gear it saves me a lot on gas. i get 20 mpg. My 6 cylinder camaro gets worse mileage which seems strange to me but whatever!

Same here, 94 Chevy PU=10mpg at best. Vette=20mpg, 17mpg if I floor it at every stop sign and light. Far more economical. Got the car out as soon as the salt was washed off the road, for that very reason.
"After 30 years it seems like we could have figured something out. I remember the gas lines in '73."
Good progress with regards to mileage and driveability have been made during the last 30 years thanks to fuel injection. There ARE better solutions but would anyone want to buy a Hydrid Corvette?
I read a fascinating biography on Bill Lear. He invented many engineering marvels including the Lear Jet and the 8 track stereo tape player to name a few. His greatest world changing marvel never had a chance. A near perpetual motion steam engine!
Anything that burned would start the process, anything. The machine used steam compression and reclaimed the exhaust vapor (steam) and condensed it back into water (fuel). Zero pollution.
OK, we all know how pathetic Stanley Steamer engine power was. He installed this engine in a school bus and ran it 100 MPH! The horsepower was around 250. it got 200 miles per gallon of WATER!
So why aren't we cruising around on Evian? Oil companies. Standard Oil started the US economy in the 30s. The tendrils extend to every corner of commerce. Any innovation has been snuffed out by them. I see shelves of alternative engines in a hanger at Area 51 next to the alien spacecrafts.
These companies 'suggested' to Lear that he should not persue the technology. There would be repercussions to his loved ones. Welcome to Nazi Germany.
It's not depressing. That's how corporations and Government have always worked and always will. It's just a shame non the less.

It looks as if there are some folks here who are turning their backs on the laws of physics.
The two most important factors in fuel consumption are weight and aerodynamics. It takes much more fuel to haul more weight. It also takes much more fuel to push a vehicle with more frontal area through the air.
In case you haven't noticed, a large truck or suburban will be about DOUBLE or more the weight of a Vette and have probably TRIPLE the frontal area.
All modern vehicles in all categories are MUCH more fuel efficient than their counterparts of twenty or more years ago. There has been a massive amount of R&D that has brought us to this point. There's no conspiracy at work here, just good old free enterprise.
Would you rather be living in Western Europe where gasoline is at least $6 per gallon?
BTW, the rise in gasoline prices has nothing to do with action in Iraq. There are several factors that are effecting it.
First, it's the same ol' OPEC handcuffing the world with their price fixing. This organization could not operate in the US because they would be blatantly violating the US anti-trust laws.
Second, laws pushed through by environmental extremists have made it financially unfeasible to build new refineries. Our refinery capacity is at its max, so they will naturally charge more for seasonal changeover etc. You can't blame someone for not building a new refinery if they are going to lose money doing it.
We still have, by far, the cheapest gas prices in the world. I'm not saying that we should like these prices, but you need to look at the factors behind it instead of just believing whatever CNN or Dan Rather tells you. Don't go through life as just another sheep in the flock.

Can we finaly open ANWAR? I live here, and cant/havent ever got the to the real reason that the Brits now "own" the north slope. Why? Cause we gave it to the Red Coats. Theres oil in tem there flat lands up north. Ive even worked there, when we drilled.SCORED and the company MAN said theres no oil here.Cap it(christmass tree) and we'll try again. Its all tax vs revenue. Oh,by the way there are fools that think we need to give INCENTIVES to the oil companies to stay and "help" us(or is that US)? Thay can all kiss my ass as refined fuel is at least $2.00 per gallon over priced. Rape of the Subjects or repressed.

My $0.02,
:_rock :beer I gotta say that I like the political component showing up here. We do have cheaper fuel prices than the rest of the world! Unknown1, I salute you :pat Maybe it's just because we're already supporting everyone else that we pay less :duh
Perhaps our oil wealth is being reservered stratigically, I dunno :confused But, as Americans we will do what needs to be done to survive, at all costs individually. That's ALL that really matters in the end.
Does it suck that our federal, state and local representitives SCREW us for political gain. HELL YES! But the friggin morons vote them in. Everyone thinks they are entitled to what someone else earns and produces :(
Survival of the fittest will always endure in the end :r :m

Coming from a man who gets a yearly check from those oil companies averaging 1,600.00 for the past 5 years. This years check was 1,100? Which a price of gas is 2.00 so 550 gallons of gas that would buy. THaat's enough for 27 weeks of gas in a vette.

What would be your clean burning source that can provide the 600+ degrees to heat a water source that large and produce enough steam at the same time?

Amazing, gas is only one by product of oil. You need to go look at all the other things oil itself produces or is used in the production of.
Nobody is looking at the fact that the value of the dollar is currently declining. What about China, they have been buying raw materials from any source, including oil. There are so many factors in the valuation of gas.
Sounds like you need to get your head out of a hole and stop believing in the X-files. Gas has been one commodity that has take na long time to rise to it's current price based on inflation. Look at a gallon of milk, loaf of bread, a coke even. How often do most of you eat at McD's. Look at their prices for a burger fries and a coke in the mid 60's and compare it today.
IMHO you will not see gas dip below 2.00 for a long time....... if ever again.

Jeffvette, yes sir,my kids and I have recived those diminishing checks. Hell yes I put them to good use for my kids. Why should anyone turn down money? When its NOT yours? Who ever made you feel that this was not your revenue? Your not a worthy U.S. Citizen ? Oh,sorry someone sold you out. This **** is ours, why shouldent we all have it, the jobs, revenue etc that it can create? My concept must have got lost somewhere. We,as a World power, can, produce all the fuel WE need. Therefore,we dont need to bow down to or give away anything. Is that a problem to you? I ask you,WHO PAYS YOU... Do you work for the Brits or worse...? Wish those checks were $1600(on average)for the last 5 years.Besides,What does it REALLY mean to you? Oil company,or not? What FUELS you?

Which was you get money back from the oil revenue yet you're still *****ing about prices.
I used to live in Anchorage worked for Veco for a while and also Chugiach North supplying equipment to the North Slope. I used to get that 1,000 a year, and it was a nice check which I stashed away. I would love to see them open ANWR. The people that don't want it open are f--king fools.
The real issue is there truely is not enough oil anywhere in the world The mid east is on a decling oil schedule as is the North Slope. People need to get out of the Hummers and other huge SUV's that get single digit numbers.
And BTW, yes the checks do average out to 1,600 over the last 5 years.

I just got back from the Cruise fest today and was pleased with the mileage i got in the vette. Going down i averaged 24.1 mpg with the top down. I suspected it would be better with the top up, so on the way home because of dark storm clouds i ran with the top up and averaged 25.6 mpg. Throughout the whole trip my average was 22.1 mpg. Not bad, made it there and back on less then a quarter of a tank.

I lose about 2 miles a gallon with my top down too, but it is allot more fun.....
I gotta be honest and say that I've been driving the Camry much more lately. I've probably driven the Vette' twice in the last 2 weeks. Maybe the folks here in the Chicagoland area are getting hit harder. Our premium is up to $2.50 :cry

Dood! this is my driver, $2.28 for regular. It's :cool if you can afford to own and drive several different cars (and more power to you). I own 3 running vehicles, but i can't afford to insure them all being single, so I gotta choose my FAV to :s :beer
And I'm still down with a lot of what unknown1 has to say, although I think he took Jeff down without provocation. F the PC bull that has taken this country over the last :confused at least 20 years. I think that I live in a world of Morons here in the SSR of PDX and OR, but the sad fact is that all this crap is EVERYWHERE, that is not rural America. Got a big surprise saturday. nearby gas station cut the price on decalf down to $1.97,is this happening everywhere? Sure hope so as it is long over due ! Hope all are getting in on this. Iam selfish and wish I was paying less. May even drive out this summer to see folks and relatives in states . Havent been "home?" in 23 years,so this may be fun... Bad part is Illhave to drive the truck as Ive got things to pick up and bring back with me. Couldent read the pump price on the "good" stuff, but the truck is full for a change. It hasent been driven much lately. Looking forward to lower gas prices for all. I hope Iam not making enemies here.Jeff, dident mean to **** you off..if I did, sorry.

Hi friends! Happy Memorial Day! While filling her up the guy next to me makes a smirking comment about how I don't pass many gas stations in 'that thing' while dumping $57 worth into the Navigator @ 11mpg.
Did I tell him about 27 on the highway? Hell no.
I'm driving it more now because the rest of the fleet is BROKEN. The Saab has no AC blower, the '77 Ford bad battery, '98 Explodition no front brakes, shoot the golf cart blew a piston up.
So now it's the most dependable too.
Take a few seconds this weekend to remember why we have all the privileges we enjoy. Pray for the men and women that protect it now.

Hey Moon,
What kind of mileage are you getting out of the 383? We are at about 17 city and 26 hi-way. (Read that 95 – 115 MPH.) If I really romp around it droops to 16. I think that is great for a 3300 pound car. I was good last week and did a 200 mile trip at 85 MPH, the computer gave me a 28 MPG average.:D

:w SPANISHVETTS that sounds pretty darn good to me. I'm getting just under 22 MPG in general driving which is about half and half City, Rural, but, I haven't bothered to change the speedo for the 3:33's and 17's. I don't know if I will. As far as I can tell I'm about 7mph off (high) on the speedo. So I guess a little over 20. And I get on it liberally as I see fit ;)
I'll be taking a trip to Nevada, around 600 mi. late next next month for the Pony Express, but I'll be towing a trailer with my wheels and tires as well as tools, jacks, ect. so it'll be interesting to see what the milage is. I hope to get 27+, we'll see.
The boat won't be there ;LOL We're up to $2.30 for regular :(
