View Full Version : mounting luggage rack
Just wondering if anyone has ever drilled any holes in a corvette body? I just bought a luggage rack for my 93 convert and I have to drill 18 holes in the rear deck to mount it....scary thought. Anyway, what would be the best bit for the job???

Don't be scared Ness, it's only plastic...just kiddin... i put a rack on my previous 75' and thru-transom exhaust on 2 boats...i like to start out with small bits and work my way up ....use a good hi speed bit and a good drill and masking tape if you're afraid of chipping....does your rack use the rubber wellnuts? Rod,
I'm glad you hooked up with Jim Martley as I know it can be very scary drilling those holes for the luggage rack!!

Anything you learned about mounting a luggage rack
Scarey thing it was, drilling 16 holes in a perfectly good rear deck. I bought a new split point drill which worked well. just make sure the template is stretched out tight and taped well so it doesn't move while you are drilling. Some of the holes had small chips next to them, but the rack rails covered all the ugly stuff.
Put a piece of rubber hose over the bit as a stop, so you won't drill a hole in the fuel tank, (thanks Jim). All in all the job went as planned. The car looks MUCH better with a rack on back!
