Default Gearbox rattle in Park or Neutral

I have quite a loud rattle coming from my autobox when I blip the throttle in park or neutral. Once in gear it is fine. Does anyone have an idea what it could be?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Guy,

My first thought would be to check the linkage for loose bolts If you haven't checked the mounting hardware yet, I would start there, then we have a foundation to build from

Thanks for the reply. I have had a look under the car and can not see any obvious external sources. The sound appears to coming from inside.
I at first thought it was a heat shield rattling on the exhaust or something similar but this proved not to be the case. It is a very loud rattle which goes as soon as a gear is selected.

Guy,

Have a look under the console the seats are not that hard to take out, esp. if they are mechanical and not electric.. then the side panels come off with 3 screws per panel..

Thanks Bud.

I have taken the side panels off to have a look but nothing from there. With the engine running in park or neutral and lying under the car it appears to be from the area where the starter is but I can not feel or detect any vibration from the starter. The starter works and sounds fine.
Could anything in the converter sound like this when not in gear?

Guy

I had rattles like that on mine, turned out to be welds broken on the exhaust heat shields.Tacked them and noise gone.

if the noise is inside the bell-housing area. remove the cover and check all the bolts on the torque converter that attach to the flywheel.

just a thought

Thank you for the suggestions. I have just returned from a business trip and will check further as soon as I can.

The areas that Phxraptor and Robin suggested are very good starts. I had both situations happen to me.
